In their first game played in a week due to the weather, the Bellwood-Antis girls softball team dropped a 19-1 decision to Claysburg-Kimmel on Wednesday afternoon at Bellwood.
Lady Bulldog pitcher Renee Musselman allowed just one hit, striking out one while walking three to pick up the four-inning victory. Kayla Musselman and Lacey Claar each drove in four runs, with Claar getting a double, the only extra base hit in the game. Renee Musselman helped herself out with two hits and two RBIs and Marissa Leslie added three RBIs for Claysburg-Kimmel.
Christine Pfahler had the Bellwood-Antis girls’ lone hit, a single in the fourth inning. The Lady Blue Devils scored their run in the first, when Becky Forney drew a walk, stole second, was bunted over to third and scored on a ball hit by Charlie Burns that got through the Claysburg-Kimmel second baseman for an error. The B-A girls welcome Burns, one of just two returning starters from the 2003 squad, who played her first game at her normal position behind the plate after starting her first game since recovering from surgery at first base last week against Moshannon Valley.
“Claysburg is a very good team,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Alex Sitman. “They are the whole package-good pitching and every girl in their lineup will hit the ball. They have already beaten (perennial power) Southern Huntingdon this year.
“Our girls continue to work hard, but they need to start believing in themselves. They are improving and will come around. We are getting into the part of our schedule now where I feel we can be competitive with the teams we will be playing.”
The Bellwood-Antis softball squad (0-5) will travel to Glendale today to make up a rainout then travels to Altoona on Friday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
