A pitcher concerned with his ERA probably wouldn’t want to pitch in a game between Tyrone and Bishop Guilfoyle this season.
Going into Saturday’s Ron Fiochetta Memorial Tournament consolation game, the teams had combined for 34 runs and more than 40 hits in a doubleheader split earlier this month.
Nothing changed Saturday, as the Marauders and Eagles together totaled 34 hits and 19 runs in BG’s 10-9 come-from-behind win in eight innings at Vets Field in Altoona.
It was the Eagles second straight loss after falling 10-0 to Altoona in the tourney opener and it dropped them to 1-3 in their last four games. Tyrone is now 3-6 in the month of May after starting the season 7-1.
Max Soellner took the loss for Tyrone, coming on in the sixth inning in relief of Clint Wilson with Tyrone holding An 8-3 lead. He allowed seven runs on five hits, dropping to 1-3 this season.
Over the first five, Wilson allowed only one earned run and struck out five.
Despite the loss, Tyrone continued to pound the ball, with four extra base hits out of its 16 total. Brit Mingle homered for the second time in three games and drove in five runs, while Derrick Soellner had two hits and drove in a pair. Mingle and Brice Mertiff had three hits while Ben Gummo, Derrick Soellner and Max Soellner each had two apiece.
Tyrone led 5-0 after the third inning following back-to-back double by Mingle and Jason Wilson and an RBI single by Derrick Soellner.
After the Marauders cut it to 4-3 in the fifth, Tyrone added three more in the sixth on Mingle’s three-run home run.
But Guilfoyle stormed back in bottom of the sixth with five runs, including a solo home run by Jon Milliron and a run-scoring double by Andy Garafoli.
Tyrone went ahead 9-8 in the eighth on an RBI single by Wilson, but BG tied it in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring double by Josh Destefano, who went 5-for-5 on the day. He later scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
