Bellwood-Antis won both boys and girls Mountain Conference titles and Tyrone’s Tommy Crowl was the leading scorer as well as holding two spots on the Boys Mountain Conference All-Star Team.
Crowl compiled 154 points to nip Bellwood-Antis senior Dan Houser who was second with 151 points. Tom was the top scorer in both the 400 meter dash, where he was undefeated in all pre-State Championship competition, and in the long jump.
“Tommy had a complete turnaround his senior year after losing his junior year to injury,” explained Tyrone head track coach Tony Yaniello. “Often missing an entire year like that hinders the athlete during the following season, but Tommy wouldn’t allow that to happen. Up to the State Meet at Shippensburg, no one in the state of Pennsylvania had defeated Tommy in the 400.”
Crowl, who broke the school record in the 400 during the season, was the Golden Eagles only double placewinner at the 2004 District VI-AA Meet winning the 400 and placing sixth in the long jump.
Crowl continues an Eagle trend in leading the Conference in scoring, joining Terry Watters (1971, 1972), Dennis Rozick (1979, 1980), Scott Nail (1989), Jeff White (2000) and Jim Wiggin (2001). On the girls’ side, Lady Eagle Christina Burnett led the conference in scoring for three straight years (2000, 2001, 2002).
Tyrone teammate Justin Wilson was fifth in the scoring race with 108 points and Billy Dean was seventh with 102 points.
On the All-Star Team, in which the top point scorer in each event made the First Team, Justin Wilson (110 hurdles), Leonard Wilson (triple jump), Ron Miller (shot put) and Adam Shaffer (javelin) joined Crowl on the All-Star Team.
In the team race, the Tyrone boys finished 5-1, losing only to league champ Bellwood-Antis, while the Lady Eagles, weakened by a great lack of numbers, finished 1-5.
On the girls side, Lady Eagle sophomore Emily Lloyd finished as the seventh highest scorer with 115 points and made the All-Star Team in two positions (long jump, triple jump). Sophomore classmate Emily Ingle also commanded two spots on the All-Star Team (400 run, 800 run).
Although numbers have been down for the girls recently, coach Yaniello believes that trend should end soon and has high hopes for the 2005 Tyrone girls squad. “All of our points (54) in the Mountain Conference Meet were scored by sophomores,” said Yaniello. “With these girls back next year as a solid nucleus, some younger girls moving up from the junior high and still others from the senior high who want to come out, we should be in good shape.”
Bellwood-Antis (6-0) which swept through boys’ competition undefeated, has now won nine of the last 12 league titles, including the last three in a row. Only Tyrone (1995, 2000 and 2001) has interrupted that streak.
Dan Houser, who was second to Crowl in the scoring race with 151, occupies the 100 and 200 meter dash spots on the All-Star Team for the Blue Devils. Aaron Bell was fourth in the scoring race with 109 points and was the league All-Star in the 1600 run. Corey Sweigert was 10th in scoring with 89 points and Matt Plummer made the All-Star Team in the discuss. The Blue Devils 400 relay team of Derrick Hoffer, John McFalls, Dustin Harris and Houser was named to the All-Star Team as well.
“Dan has worked very hard and been consistently outstanding for Bellwood-Antis track. He capped a great career with his third trip to the State Meert at Shippensburg” said B-A boys coach Nick Lovrich. “Our depth all year was what put us over the top. we focus on the team concept and the kids buy into it, which is what makes us successful.”
The Bellwood-Antis girls (6-0) also went undefeated in league action to nail down their third league title in a row and fifth in six seasons.
Allison Cherry topped the conference charts in scoring for the Lady Blue Devils with 146 points, Lauren Carter was third with 139 and Ashley Mueller was eighth with 113 points.
Cherry made the All-Star squad at the 1600 run. She was joined by Lauren Carter (100 dash), Erica Greene (200 dash), Stephanie Hatch (high Jump) and Allison Sinisi (pole vault).
The Lady Blue Devils also claimed spots on the All-Star Team with their 400 and 3200 relay teams. The 400 relay was composed of Haley Crider, Carter, Greene and Mueller. The 3200 team consisted of Cherry, Nicole Ross, Heather Shura and Jenna Ralston.
“Many of the points we scored this year came from underclassmen,” recounted long-time Bellwood-Antis girls coach Julie Roseborough, who is retiring from teaching, but will continue coaching the track program. ‘Allison Chery has been a rock for the girls track program. She has been an outstanding leader for the younger girls. We will really miss her.”
The B-A girls show no signs of stopping returning Carter, Greene, Mueller, Hatch, Crider, Ross, Ralston and Sinisi, who are all underclassmen.
