Tyrone has achieved many of their previous nine victories with pitching. Monday night, the pitching was still there as Clint Wilson went the distance allowing only two unearned runs, but the offense finally came around as well. Tyrone belted out fifteen hits including seven doubles and a home run in a 16-2 trouncing of Corporal Miller.
Despite all the offense, early on it looked like it was going to be another low scoring pitcher\’s duel for Tyrone.
Ben Gummo got things going for Tyrone in the top of the first by drawing a walk, stealing second and moving to third on a throwing error. He scored on a wild pitch to give Tyrone a 1-0 lead after a half an inning.
Wilson struck out the first two batters Corporal Miller sent to the plate and got out of the first inning unscathed.
Neither team scored in the second, but an error and a RBI double by Andy Criste tied the game in the third.
Tyrone couldn\’t take advantage of Derrick Soellner\’s leadoff double in their half of the fourth, but Corporal Miller seized an opportunity handed to them by two Tyrone errors in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead after four innings.
The fifth inning marked the awakening of Tyrone\’s offense. Tyler Hoover was hit by a pitch, but erased on a fielder\’s choice grounder hit by Matt Morrissey. Morrissey stole second and scored on a Barry Gummo single. Ben Gummo knocked in Barry, and Soellner brought home Ben with his second double of the game to put Tyrone ahead for good 4-2.
A Tyrone flurry of offense in the sixth inning was fueled by a Corporal Miller miscue. Ben Lynn singled and stole second. With two outs, Criste made a bad throw to first on a Morrissey grounder that allowed Lynn to score and the top of the line up to bat. Barry Gummo doubled in Morrissey, and Ben Gummo followed with a two run homer to left center to break the game open 8-2.
Tyrone continued to add to their lead in the seventh when thirteen batters came to the plate. Soellner led off with his third double, and Tyler Rickards walked before Shane Gherrity doubled in Soellner. Lynn brought home Rickards with a RBI single, and Hoover was hit by another pitch to load the bases. Morrissey came through with a sacrifice fly, and Barry Gummo was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Ben Gummo produced his fourth and fifth RBI of the game with a double, and Clint Wilson brought home Barry Gummo with a ground out. Soellner came up for the second time in the inning and doubled again when his fly ball was lost in the lights to bring in Ben Gummo. After an error, Gherrity got his second hit of the inning to score Soellner before Lynn lined out to end the eight-run inning.
“It\’s important that the top of the lineup is getting on base; then all the bottom half of the lineup has to do is put the ball in play to drive them in,” said head coach John Gummo when asked how important it was that Ben Gummo, who hits second in the lineup, had a big game.
Corporal Miller managed only one base runner in the bottom of the seventh, and Wilson struck out Pat Gaeto to end the game and give Tyrone a 16-2 victory.
“We finally started hitting the ball tonight, but the key to our season is pitching, and Clint pitched real well,” said Gummo.
Wilson allowed only two unearned runs on four hits, three of them by Criste, while striking out nine and walking one.
Tyrone is next in action Tuesday evening against Park Furniture at Tyrone. Game time is set for 6:00 PM.
