All season the Tyrone Legion has depended on its pitching staff to put them over the top. Thursday night, it held up for five innings against first place ReMax Realty before collapsing as Tyrone played their fifth game in six days. Jason Wilson was stellar on the mound through five innings but tired in the sixth, and ReMax beat around Tyrone\’s relief pitching to roll to a 14-2 victory in a game much closer than the final score indicated.
Wilson allowed only a double to ReMax Realty pitcher Jon Milliron in the first inning, and Tyrone got a threat going in the bottom of the first thanks to Milliron\’s wildness. Barry Gummo walked and stole second. After a ground out, Gummo moved to third on a wild pitch and Clint Wilson walked. Wilson stole second, and Derrick Soellner walked to load the bases, but Milliron avoided any damage by regaining his control and striking out the next two batters.
For the next three innings both pitchers cruised. Jason Wilson allowed only two singles, and Milliron got by only allowing three singles and a walk.
With two outs in the fifth, ReMax Realty was able to put a run across the plate with a double from Neil DeYarmin and an Adam Kaack triple.
Tyrone got a one out walk from Ben Gummo in their half of the fifth, but he was thrown out trying to steal before Clint Wilson doubled. Wilson was stranded at second after Milliron got Soellner to ground out.
After failing to tie the game, the Legion let it slip away in the sixth inning. Mike Rodriguez led off with a home run. A single, triple, and sacrifice fly later it was 4-0. A Matt Zeak single ended Jason Wilson\’s night on the mound.
“Jason Wilson pitched great into the sixth inning, but when he ran out of gas so did the rest of the team. We had no other pitching,” said head coach John Gummo.
Shane Gherrity relieved Wilson and made his first pitching appearance of the season. Things started well for Gherrity as he got a strike out for the second out of the inning, but went downhill quickly. After three singles, Rodriguez hit his second home run of the inning to put ReMax Realty ahead 9-0 before Gherrity got Mike Montgomery to ground out.
The Legion started their own two out rally in the bottom of the sixth when Gherrity singled and moved to second on a Ben Lynn walk. Tyler Hoover drove home Gherrity with a single, and Barry Gummo brought in Lynn with one of his own. Milliron cut the rally short a pitch later when he got a ground out to end the inning.
ReMax Realty piled on some more runs in the top of the seventh with three walks, three singles, two Legion errors, and a hit by pitch to make the score 14-2 before Tyler Rickards relieved Gherrity and got A.J. Palazzi to strike out and Greg Webster to ground out.
Jason Wilson walked and Rickards was hit by a pitch with two out in the seventh, but reliever Chris Packard got Gherrity to fly out and end the game.
The loss ended Tyrone\’s four game win streak.
Tyrone\’s over worked pitching staff will not be getting any time to rest. The Legion plays Friday evening at 6:00 PM in a make up game against Park Furniture at Tyrone. This weekend, the Legion will take on Barkman Oil at Martinsburg and Locker Room at Hollidaysburg.
Legion Notes: Ben Gummo\’s four game hit streak was snapped in the game… The Legion offense did better than their two runs indicate, they collected seven hits, seven walks and a hit by pitch for an on base percentage of .441 in the game, but could not come up with any clutch hits… Rickards also made his Kelly Federation pitching debut in the game, allowing only a hit by pitch in 2/3 of an inning…ReMax’s Rodriguez has had quite a week hammering six home runs in three games.
