2003 Tyrone Big 8 Football Conference All-Stars – Six Tyrone football players were selected to the First Team Big 8 Football Conference All-Star Team at the 31st Annual Big 8 Awards Banquet held on Wednesday evening at the Smithfield Fire Hall. In addition, six Eagles were selected to the Second Team and four earned selection to the Honorable Mention list. Those honored include: Tom Crowl, First Team defensive secondary and Second Team wide receiver and special teams; Jason Wilson, Second Team secondary; Brice Mertiff, First Team running back and Honorable Mention punter; Terry Tate, First Team Defensive line; Ben Gummo, Second Team linebacker and Honorable Mention placekicker and running back; Max Soellner, First Team defensive end and Second Team tight end; Brinton Mingle, Honorable Mention linebacker; Justin Clark, First Team offensive guard and Second Team defensive end and Ralph VanAllman, First Team tackle.

Poppy sales begin – Tyrone police chief James Miller becomes the first local contributor in support of the VFW Buddy Poppy Days underway in the borough. The days promote the VFW Post 4559 project, in support of hospitalized veterans and their families. Those attending the presentation were VFW Auxiliary President Betty Patton, Chief Miller and VFW Commander Daniel Thomas. Representatives of the post will have the bright red poppies for sale at a number of locations around town.

Mamie Eisenhower dies; Ike’s widow – Mamie Eisenhower, seriously ill since suffering a stroke in September died of heart failure early today, ten years after the death of her husband, the 34th President of the United States.
Fifty years ago, November 1, 1954
New Tyrone radio station WTRN now being constructed – After 13 months of delays due to governmental processing, construction work on Tyrone’s new radio station, WTRN, got underway over this past weekend. Company officials voiced the hope that cold weather will hold off long enough to permit the completion of all outside work so that the station will be able to go on the air very shortly, rather than being delayed until spring.
