With many area motorists traveling during the summer months, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) would like to remind area motorists to ensure their vehicles are well-maintained and working properly.
“Vehicle breakdowns are never convenient, but they can be especially problematic during hot weather,” said PennDOT Secretary Allen D. Biehler. “By taking the time to have your vehicle checked by a mechanic now, you may be able to prevent a future problem and better enjoy your summer travels.”
PennDOT officials stated that the cooling system should be checked to be certain that it is functioning properly to help avoid over-heating. Also, the battery should be checked since battery failure is a common problem during hot weather.
Fluid levels and tire tread depth should also be checked. According to PennDOT, a very easy way to check tire tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If you can see the entire head, the tires are worn and should be replaced.
Tires should also be properly inflated for maximum fuel efficiency.
PennDOT also suggests a number of tips for safe summer driving. These tips include: never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, which can heat up quickly in hot weather; when traveling a long distance, try to plan your trip for early in the day or later in the evening when the weather is cooler; carry a cell phone and charger in case of an emergency; carry extra water and non-perishable food; remember to turn headlights on any time windshield wipers are in use due to rain; and always remember to buckle up and never drink and drive.
PennDOT would like to remind motorists to remain vigilant of construction on area roadways and to follow all laws when driving in a work zone. This includes such laws as a change in the speed limit and that headlights must be turned on while driving through a work zone.
There will be PennDOT and local road crews on a number of area roadways this summer. Locally, a number of Tyrone Borough Streets will be repaired this summer, along with PennDOT crews repairing sections of Interstate 99, between the Tyrone and Bellwood exits, Old Route 220 near the Tipton/Grazierville exit, and State Route 453 just south of Tyrone.
