Tyrone looked to bounce back off of a loss to Bellefonte as they traveled to Indian Valley Friday night. Tied for third in the conference, Tyrone was 11-6(7-3) going up against the 6-12 Indian Valley Warriors (5-5) who looked to keep their home court solid.
This is one of the toughest places to play, Tyrone was in for a battle.
Tyrone got off on the wrong foot to start off the game as Leonard Wilson and Kevin Hershberger quickly picked up two fouls in the first quarter that took them out of play until midway through the second quarter.
A lot of scoring from both teams kept the game moving, 23-20 after one in favor of Indian Valley. It looked as if the game might push toward eighty or ninety points for each team at the end at the pace they were going.
In the second quarter, Tyrone kept Hershberger and Wilson out of the game to ensure that they would not pick up another foul before the half. This meant that Tyrone’s bench had to step it up in order for Tyrone to win this basketball game.
“We got some good bench minutes in the first half,” coach Mike Harris said. “We had a couple of guys make some big shots that kept us right with them.”
Down 30-27, Tyrone went on an 8-0 run, led by Adam Corle as he drained six of his 22 points with 3:31 remaining in the first half. Tyrone took the lead 35-30 on their run only to be answered right back by Indian Valley as they tore off an 11-1 run to finish off the half. The run put Indian Valley up 41-36 going into the half and a commanding home court advantage going into the locker room.
“They hit a couple of three’s and got the crowd into the game,” Harris said. “We tried to battle back, but we just couldn’t keep a lead before the half.”
Going into the half, Adam Corle led Tyrone with 12 points scoring eight in the second quarter, coming off of the bench and playing to the best of his ability to keep Tyrone close.
The third quarter looked bad for Tyrone as they got behind early to the Warriors, 51-44 with just 3:14 to go in the quarter. Cody Hartzler hit the Warriors first three shots that started the Warriors 8-0 run to start off the third quarter.
With Tad Chamberlain picking up his fourth foul at 5:40 in the third, Tyrone had to rely on their backcourt offense to bust the Warriors runs on offense and keep within a respectable lead, but Indian Valley kept pouring it on as they went up 58-47 at the end of the third quarter. The crowd kept the Warriors rolling and Tyrone needed to stop Cody Hartzler if they wanted any chance of getting back into the game as he hit 10 of the Warriors 17 in the third.
It looked as if Tyrone was getting ready to pack it up and pull out, but they didn’t give up.
After a couple of scores from both sides, the score read 61-49 in favor of Indian Valley.
Wilson went hard to the basket with 7:16 to go in the game, and hit both foul shots to cut the lead to 10 as Tyrone called a quick timeout. It was obvious Harris was thinking of how he was going to make a big run to get back into the game, and his game plan was successful.
Tyrone came out of the timeout on fire, scoring the next eight points and cutting the Warrior lead to 61-59 with just 5:30 to go in the game. The crowd was stunned to see Tyrone make a comeback and put the Warrior’s lead at risk.
With the game up for grabs, the Warriors called a timeout with 5:28 to go in the game to try and slow down the Eagles run.
After the short break, Cody Hartzler nailed a shot to remain ahead 63-59, but Hershberger and Wilson picked two straight passes and converted both to tie the game up at 63-all with 5:09 to go. The scoring was outrageous going back and forth, it was like an NBA game as the teams scored on almost every possession in the fourth quarter.
Down to the last minute of the game, Tyrone and Indian Valley were locked at 69 and both teams were in the double bonus. This was going to be a foul shooting contest from here on out.
Indian Valley had control of the ball with 1:08 to go as Cody Hartzler was fouled hard going to the basket and hit one of two to give the Warriors a 70-69 lead.
After this possession, Tyrone failed to score, but a controversial call that put Josh Crabtree out of the game for his fifth foul caused an uproar from the players. Adam Corle received a technical foul, which gave the Warriors two shots and the ball back.
It wasn’t over yet as coach Mike Harris looked to ask why the technical foul was given and the official gave him a technical foul.
So two technical fouls, a one and one, and the ball back all with just 43 seconds left in the game as Hartzler managed to hit five of his six foul shots to give the Warriors a 77-69 lead and the ball back. After a missed shot on Indian Valley’s possession, Hershberger hit a crunch-time jumper to cut the lead to 77-71 with 35 seconds left.
Hartzler seemed to get to the line every time Tyrone fouled as he hit two more from the line to bump it to an eight point lead with 29 to go.
Byron Kost checked into the game to look for a three pointer and got it with 16 seconds left, Tyrone was down just 80-74 and still had a chance of coming back.
After the timeout, Tyrone forced a quick turnover by Hershberger who came down and launched a trey from deep to cut the lead to just three points, 80-77. Only eight seconds remained in the game as Hartzler went to the line once again and put the Warriors back up by five, 82-77.
A two possession basketball game, Tyrone needed a three and a quick timeout to give them some time to have a last second shot if needed.
With the game at risk, Tyrone forced Indian Valley to turn the ball over as a deep inbound pass trickled out of bounds at the feet of Ben Yoder.
With seven seconds to go, Tyrone’s Josh Clark pushed the ball up the court and kicked it to Hershberger for another three that cut the lead to 82-80 with just :03 seconds remaining in the game.
This was clutch performance at its best as Tyrone somehow scored 11 points in just 35 seconds when they needed it the most.
Time ran out on Tyrone’s luck, as they had a late inbound pass stolen with no time remaining, losing a heartbreaker 83-80.
Tyrone is now 11-7 overall, losing their last two games to Bellefonte and now Indian Valley. They are 7-4 in the conference and look to get back on track Monday as they take on Central. Adam Corle scored a season high 22 points in their loss Friday night.
Indian Valley improves to 6-5 in the conference and 7-12 overall. Cody Hartzler was 13-18 from the foul line and scored 28 points to lead the Warriors in their victory over the Eagles.

The Eagles came out really slow in the first half, trailed four at the half and missing too many open looks. Tyrone’s defense held the Warriors to four points in the third quarter, giving the momentum back to the Eagles going to the fourth where Byron Kost hit four of his five three’s to give Tyrone the victory, 44-41.
Kost led all Eagle scorers with 17 in the win over the Warriors. Shane Barr scored seven and had several clutch passes in the second half to help the Eagles come from behind.
