The Bellwood-Antis girls basketball team visited Bishop Guilfoyle’s Pleasant Valley court on Saturday to make up a game that had been scheduled a week earlier, but postponed due to snow and ice. The Lady Marauders celebrated Senior Day and honored four seniors prior to the 2:30 p.m. afternoon varsity start.
BG gave Bellwood-Antis hops for an upset jumping out to an 8-7 first quarter lead. BG coach Mark Moschella, who as has been his custom of this game started an all-senior lineup, but switched to the younger lineup, the Lady Marauders have used for much of the season and the BG girls took over.
Bishop Guilfoyle, led by sophomore post player Mary Foor, who scored 19 points, the Lady Marauders outscored the Bellwood-Antis girls 36-20 over the two middle periods and used a stall and fouls shots in the fourth quarter to stay even at 13-13 there.
BG’s Becca Filler and the Lady Blue Devils’ Steph Hatch traded three-pointers to get the game underway and two fouls shots by Hatch and Lauren Carter and one by Lindsey Claar completed the first period with Bellwood-Antis up by one.
A Carter bucket was all the Lady Blue Devils would score over the opening three minutes of the second quarter with BG taking a 14-13 lead. Hatch buried a trey to slice the deficit to 14-13 and a Basket and two more free throws by Carter kept the Blue Devils one point behind, until Bishop Guilfoyle hit three of the final four baskets of the half. Included in that total were the final two points on a layup by Amanda DeAntonio when the B-A defense got caught napping with four seconds on the clock, to jump out to a 25-19 lead at halftime.
The only Blue Devil score in that run was a basket by Allison Sinisi, that cut the lead at the time to 23-19.
“Anytime you play Bishop Guilfoyle, with their history and the players they have and coach Moschella is great coach, you are always in store for a great game,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich. “Our kids played well at the beginning of the game. The first half, we were down four points. In the second half our shots weren’t going in, their shots were going in. That was probably the biggest difference.”
Bishop Guilfoyle continued their run into the first minutes of the third quarter with three more baskets, before one free throw from Hatch and two from Carter, who led B-A with 19 points, would cut the BG lead to 31-22. A bucket and two more points from the charity stripe by Carter and two free throws by Jamie Smith were all Bellwood-Antis would score in the quarter, while BG added to their lead to take a 15-point advantage going into the fourth quarter, 43-28.
The Lady Blue Devils played the Bishop Guilfoyle girls even in the fourth quarter, with BG taking as much time off the clock as they could on each possession, counting on eight points from the foul line and just one trey and one two-pointer in the period.
Lauren Carter grabbed a rebound and put it back up for a bucket and Steph Hatch put two baskets in the net, before Jamie Smith sunk three foul shots for the Lady Blue Devils. Lauren Carter scored the final four points of the game, scoring on two free throws and then adding another putback to end the contest.
Carter led the Blue Devils with 19 points, 19 rebounds and six steals. Steph Hatch, who was booed loudly every time she touched the ball by the BG student cheering section, added 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
“You know it’s nice whenever our post people play well. In the past couple games both Steph and Lauren have both done really well and they have been big games big games. Lauren has been controlling the boards and Steph is looking for a shot more. I keep telling her those shots are going to fall, I just hope it’s one of the next five.”
Foor led the Lady Marauders with 19 points on six baskets and seven-for-nine from the foul line.
The Bishop Guilfoyle junior varsity downed the Bellwood-Antis girls 39-13.
Brittany Webb scored seven points for the Lady Blue Devil Jayvees. Jessica Parson had nine rebounds and two steals, and Shalee Hunter scored four points and had seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Lyndsay Neugebauer and Megan Bowman led BG with six points each.
The Lady Blue Devils (8-11) have three home games this week. On Monday they entertain Glendale, Tuesday they play Everett and on Thursday, the host Juniata valley. All three evenings will begin with the junior varsity tilt at 6 p.m. and the varsity contest at 7:30 p.m.
