Bellwood-Antis closed the books on their 2004-05 dual meet season on Tuesday night with a home meet against Central. The Blue Devils celebrated Senior Night with a solid 53-21 win over the Scarlet Dragons and the Little Blue Devil junior High also won the preliminary match 57-42 to sweep the Spring Cove School District.
Josh Hanna, Ron Colyer and Dwayne Cherry were honored before the varsity match, in which Bellwood-Antis improved to 3-12 to end the regular season. The Blue Devils will get ready for theseason, which begins Friday and Saturday with the Eastern Sectionals at Tyrone Area High School. Wrestling will begin at 4 p.m. Friday.
The match began at 171, where the Blue Devils’ Garett Wyland (3-7) receiving a forfeit. At 189, Dwayne Cherry and Miles Lamborn were locked in a scoreless battle through the first two minutes. Cherry (14-7) opened the middle stanza with a reversal and nearfall for a 4-1 lead after two. When Lamborn took the bottom position to start the third period, Dwayne kept him there, turning him and recording the pin in 4:27.
Dave Douglas picked up a forfeit to get Central on the scoreboard at 215 and there was no heavyweight match when neither school could field a 275-pounder.
The Dragons punched through at 103, with Ben Little using a pair of reversals and a penalty point to offset a first-period takedown by B-A freshman Donnie Partner (6-18) for a 6-2 victory. A forfeit to Central’s 112-pound wrestler Ben Ritchey gave the Scarlet Dragons their only lead of the dual 15-12.
Eli Colyer made sure that lead was of very short duration when he won by a 16-0 tech fall over Central’s James Buchowski.
Colyer (16-8) opened up an 8-0 lead after one period with a takedown and two sets of nearfalls and added a reversal and two more sets of back points for the five team-point win. Eli took just 3:12 to amass the points.
With a 17-15 B-A advantage, the Blue Devils then went on a run of six-point victories.
Ricky Shawley started the circus with a nine-second pin over Josh Feathers at the beginning of the second period. Shawley (11-11), who moved back to the .500 mark for the season, opened a 4-0 advantage over Feathers with a quick takedown and nearfall in the first period, before choosing a neutral start for the second period at 125, where he flattened and pinned Feathers almost before anybody saw what was coming in 2:09.
At 135, Ronnie Wilson was also quick, wrapping Darren Mattern up for the fall in just 0:53, taking him down and briskly working for position, then applying the fall. Wilson (9-16) won only one of his first dozen varsity matches this season, as a sophomore, but has won eight of 13 since then, all six-point decisions-seven pins and one forfeit.
Luke Hammaker slipped a headlock attempt by B-A junior Dustin Harris to take a 2-0 lead at 140, but Harris received a penalty point, then opened the second period by reversing Hammaker to his back and getting the pin at the 3:15 mark.
Brandon Beech (15-13) picked up a forfeit at 130, and Josh Ervine (17-9) received one at 145.
Liam Flynn (1-0) and the Dragons’ Matt Laughlin closed out the dual with what was probably the most exciting match of the evening. The two wrestlers seemed to take turns scoring bunches of points, before Flynn won his first varsity match by pinning his opponent in 4:35. Flynn gave up a first-period takedown to Laughlin, then picked up a penalty point, reversal and three back points for a 6-2 lead at the end of one period. In the middle period, Laughlin escaped, took Liam down and recorded a three-point nearfall. Flynn reversed and Laughlin escaped to take a 9-8 lead into the final two minutes. Flynn then reversed Laughlin to his back in the third period and notched the fall.
At 152, Ron Colyer and Kevin Cammerer went through a scoreless first period, then put 15 points on the scoreboard in the second stanza. Colyer built up a 9-6 advantage with an escape, reversal, nearfall, escape and takedown to Cammerer’s takedown, reversal and back points. Cammerer started on the bottom in the third period, reversed and pinned Colyer (7-17) in 5:11 for Central’s third win overall and second on the mat.
“We got bonus points tonight, which is always huge.” said Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson. “In the couple matches, we have managed to get bonus points, we have won, so I am pleased with that. As usual, the duals we lost, weren’t for lack of effort. Even this past weekend, even the matches we lost bad, the kids went out and went after the other kids. We didn’t wrestle very well. Today we wrestled well and got some good matchups, which we managed to get falls at. That always pays big dividends.”
Junior High
In a junior high match that was over practically before it started, only one match went the distance, while nine were decided by pin, seven by forfeit, one by tech fall and there was no match at 185.
Tyler McCracken (80), Kyle Davinsizer (85), Shane Noye (115), Nick Alley (145), Caleb Stevens (165) and Troy Weyant (75) all pinned their opponents for the Little Blue Devils. Jeremy Isenberg (90), and Nic Cover (130) picked up forfeits. Dustin Pruznak won by an 18-0 tech fall and T. J. Byers won a 10-0 major decision.
In the only exhibition match for either the varsity or junior high, the Blue Devils’ Nic Cover edged Cameron Price 5-4.
