On Tuesday, the Snyder Township supervisors approved a Kunzler & Company request for an extension on their March 2004 agreement with the township from Dec. 1, 2004 to April 1, 2005. The request was made by the company so they can complete the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s request for more information about a letter of map revision application concerning the base flood elevation of the company’s recently expanded building.
A deal between the company and the township had been made in March to allow the bacon manufacturer’s 22,000-square-foot expansion project to go forward without FEMA’s approval. The agreement allowed Kunzler to go ahead with the construction and completion of the project on the assumption that the base flood elevation would be approved by FEMA.
If FEMA does not approve the plan, under the March agreement, Kunzler was granted time to take action to fix the problems.
Based on the agreement, Kunzler was granted a conditional occupancy permit and the work was completed on the expansion earlier this year.
Under the original agreement, Kunzler had until Sept. 1 to receive word from FEMA and bring the building into compliance. Supervisors granted an additional extension in August to give the company until Dec. 1. The action earlier this week grants the company an additional four months to hear from FEMA and comply with the township’s stormwater management, subdivision, land development and building permit ordinances.
The $6.5-million dollar project allowed the company to more than double its bacon production each week. According to previous Daily Herald reports, the expansion also meant an expected 25 to 50 new jobs for the area.
