Recently, several Bellwood-Antis High School students took a special field trip to Bell Mansion Apartments to distribute the hand-crafted wreaths and door hangers they had made.
Twenty-one members of the Helping Hands Club, along with their advisor Mary O’Connor, visited with the Bell Mansion residents while sharing their talents with the community.
Wreaths and door hangers, decorated by the students, were available for residents to view between 1 and 1:30 p.m. last Friday. Students then arrived at 1:30 p.m. and a drawing was held for residents. When a name was called, that individual was able to choose their favorite door decoration, which was presented to them by the student who made it.
Materials for the wreath making project were donated by a local woman. The students created the wreaths and the club paid for any extra materials they needed to complete the project.
Bell Mansion residents were very excited to have the students visit and they were also impressed with the work the club members put into making the decorations.
Mary Walker, Manager at Bell Mansion Apartments said this is the first year students have brought decorations for the residents.
The Helping Hands Club is for Bellwood-Antis High School students who like to get involved in the community. Each year there are over 60 members, both male and female, from grades nine through 12.
The group participates in several activities throughout the year. They visit with Myers Elementary kindergartners twice a year to help the kids decorate cupcakes. They also make yearly visits to Moran’s Nursing Home.
This past summer they participated in Relay for Life and made and sold fudge to help raise money.
The group has also participated in the Tuckahoe Street Fair. They make yearly interactive displays for the B-A Farm Show. These displays have included “How to prepare Snack Mix,” showing the ingredients needed, the steps for preparing the snack and also providing samples to taste. Another display provided directions and materials to make a “snowy pine cone”.
Members participating in last week’s field trip include: Dustin Harris, Chelsie Smeal, Josh Ervine, Eli Colyer, Derrick Hoffer, Kyle Drost, Ashley DeArmitt, Ian Varner, Dolly Patel, Misty Hafer, Britny Moyer, Sami Putt, Jessica Shinn, Leah Wise, Whitney Edwards, Heather Novak, Ella Dillen, Melissa Askey, Brandon Beech, Breanna McClellan and Josh Keagy.
