The Tyrone girls softball team hasn’t had a lot of luck in extra-inning ballgames. On Tuesday, at Spring Mills, the Lady Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision in eight innings.
Tyrone senior Hilary McNelis tossed a beautiful performance, striking out eight, walking none and limiting the Lady Rams to just three hits and no earned runs. Three errors contributed to unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth and eighth innings to account for the loss.
Kim Cherry and Ashley Pennebaker led the Lady Eagle attack with two hits each. Ashley Ripka reached base on an error for the Lady Eagles with one out in the fourth and scored on a single by Pennebaker for the only run Tyrone could muster.
Tyrone had runners on first and third with one out in the top of the eighth, on a single by Cherry, sacrifice by Megan Turiano and a single by Stefani Bryan, but a feilders choice at home and two infield groundouts ended the threat. Then, Penns Valley scored their second unearned run in their half of the inning to get the win.
“The girls gave everything they were asked to do,” said Tyrone coach lois Loncher. “This one falls more on me than on the team. In hindsight, I wish could take back a couple of the of the decisions I made. I didn’t do anything to help us win. It also hurt that we stranded eight runners in scoring position. This game shouldn’t have gone into extra innings. We just have to forget about this one and go on.”
The Tyrone girls softball team (2-4) travels to Southern Huntingdon on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. start.
