The Bellwood-Antis boys won the Mountain Athletic Conference Division 3 & 4 Track and Field Meet at Bellwood on Monday afternoon. Brandon Pruznak led the Blue Devils to the title in the second year of the event. The B-A sophomore won the 200 and 400 dashes and then anchored the 1600 meter relay which gave Bellwood-Antis the championship in a close race in which only 29 points separated the top four teams. Bellwood-Antis finished eight points ahead of runnerup Penns Valley with 113 points, in the 10-team race, while Penns Valley had 105, Tyrone was third with 86 and Philipsburg-Osceola was fourth with 74.
“I knew it would be very competitive. Penns Valley won it last year,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich. “I knew they would be tough. Philipsburg has been coming on strong and Tyrone’s always good.
“That kind of shows the depth we have.”
Ben Hatch won the 800 for the Blue Devils, Tyler Narehood won the shot put and Tony DelGrosso won the discuss.
In addition, the 1600 relay team of Evan Hughes, Chris Edmiston, Hatch and Pruznak took first place as did the 3200 relay team of Hughes, Edmiston, Hatch and Aaron Bell. The 400 relay team was third. Bell was also second in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600, Pruznak was fourth in the long jump, DelGrosso was fourth shot put and javelin, Hatch was third in the 400, Brandon Eger was sixth in the long jump, Adam Mueller was sixth in the 110 high hurdles, Edmiston was fifth in the 800 and Ricky Shawley was fifth in the pole vault.
“Tony DelGrosso has worked hard all season,” explained Lovrich. “He’s one of few guys that do all three throwing events. He’s just a very talented athlete to place in all three. Ben Hatch broke the freshman record in the 800 for the third or fourth time this year. Brandon Pruznak has really been stepping it up. He works hard in practice and is taking a lot of pride in what he does and it’s paying off.”
There were four meet records set in the second annual MAC Division Meet with the Blue Devils setting two of the four. DelGrosso set a new mark in the discus with a toss of 142-11, and the 3200 relay team raced to a record time of 8:32.52.
Penns Valley’s Judson Brooker set a new record in the 1600 run in 4:36.31, and Trey McClain of Mount Union threw the javelin a record 162-0. Tyrone junior Leonard Wilson tied a meet record in winning the triple jump with a combined leap of 40-2 1/2. Penns Valley won the inaugural event last year.
On the girls side, Penns Valley won for the second straight year, with 159 points followed by Bellwood-Antis with 109 1/2. Tyrone finished sixth with 38 points.
The B-A girls rode their depth to a second place position, placing in 17 of the 18 events, in addition to six first place finishes.
The Lady Blue Devils won both hurdle events with Ashley Mueller winning the 100 intermediate hurdles and Lauren Carter winning the 300 low hurdles. Steph Hatch set a new meet record in the high jump with a 5-0 jump, and Allison Sinisi set a new standard in the pole vault with a vault of 9-0.
The 400 relay team of Hatch, Carter, Erica Greene and Mueller took top honors and the 1600 relay team of Carter, Jenna Ralston, Chelsea Wilson and Lauren Leap was also victorious.
Mueller was tied for fifth in the 100 and fourth in the 200, Ralston was third in the 800, Hatch was third in both the long jump and triple jump, Leap was fourth in the 400 and fifth in the high jump and long jump, Wilson was sixth in the 400 and high jump, Sinisi was sixth in the shot put and Sarah Bell was fourth in the 3200 and fifth in the 1600. Lindsey Claar was sixth in the javelin.
The Lady Blue Devil 3200 relay team of Ralston, Arin Cherry, Becca Colyer and Bell was third.
“We knew that Penns Valley had good athletes and good depth,” said Bellwood-Antis girls coach Julie Roseborough, who was presented with a plaque to honor her 300th career win last week against Tyrone. “You don’t ever go in trying for second place, but I’m pleased with that. We knew going in that we would our hand full with Penns valley and the other schools in individual events. That was the first time Allison cleared nine feet in the pole vault and the first time Ashley Mueller has been under 17 seconds in the intermediate hurdles. This was just simply a good team effort. Our girls all work hard and it paid off in seconds and thirds and all our places.”
There were three meet records set. In addition to Hatch and Sinisi, Juniata Valley’s Natasha Bumbarger set a new mark with a heave of 102-6 in the discus.
