The Tyrone Legion got another strong pitching performance in their second game of the season, this time from Tyler Gillmen, but ReMax Realty\’s Gregg Webster was a little bit better as the defending George B. Kelley Federation champions defeated the Tyrone Legion 4-1 at Vets\’ Field Wednesday night.
Webster put the Legion down in order in the first inning with two strike outs and a pop out before ReMax got started offensively in their half of the first.
Adam Kaack led off with a sharp single and moved to third when Webster hit a fly ball that was misjudged and turned into a double. A.J. Palazzi walked to load the bases, and Mike Montgomery put ReMax on the board with a sacrifice fly that scored Kaack and moved Webster to third. Anthony Williams staked ReMax Realty out to a 2-0 lead with another sacrifice fly one batter later.
Gillmen tried to help himself with a leadoff triple to begin the second inning, but Webster got Jamie Levinson to pop out, Jeremy Myers to strike out, and Matt Morrissey to ground out to escape the jam unscathed.
Nate Williams led off the ReMax Realty half of the second inning with a towering home run to give the home team a 3-0 advantage, but Gillmen calmed down and got out of the inning without anymore damage.
Neither team was able to manage any offense in the third inning, but Tyrone chipped away at ReMax Realty\’s lead in the fourth.
Brinton Mingle hit a towering fly ball to left field that Max Sheedy lost in the sun. Mingle ended up at second base with a double. After a Derrick Soellner ground out moved Mingle to third, Gillmen ripped a double down the left field line to put the Tyrone Legion on the board. Webster then managed to strike out the next two batters to get out of the inning.
ReMax Realty threatened to get the run back in the bottom of the inning when Jeff Vaughn was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Brent Milliron. However, Levinson fielded a ground ball hit by Kaack, threw him out at first, and Tyler Golden fired across the diamond to third baseman Jesse Hertzler who applied the tag on Vaughn for a double play to end the threat.
The Tyrone Legion was able to get some offense going with the help of a rare ReMax Realty mistake in the fifth inning. Morrissey led off with his second of three hard hit balls, and it was misplayed by shortstop Anthony Williams for an error. One out later, Tyler Hoover drew a walk to put the tying run on base, but Webster got Golden to pop out, bringing Mingle to the plate. Mingle put a charge into a ball down the left field line that likely would have ended up as a two-run double that would have tied the game, but the ball landed just foul. Webster took advantage of his second chance and struck out Mingle.
ReMax Realty added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning with two singles, a walk and a double steal to make the score 4-1.
The Tyrone Legion managed only one base runner in the final two innings, and Webster struck out Jared Rodgers to achieve his 10th strike out of the day and a complete game victory.
“We have faced two really good pitchers so far, and hopefully the bats come around tomorrow. We have struck out 20 times as a team in two games, and I\’d like to see that trend end very soon,” Tyrone Legion Manager Mike Boytim said.
Gillmen picked up the loss despite allowing only six hits to the defending champions.
“We got another great performance from our pitching staff today. I was really proud of the way Tyler bounced back from those first two innings when ReMax got three runs. He kept us in the game and that\’s all you can ask from your starter against a quality team like ReMax Realty,” Boytim said.
The Tyrone Legion is in action today at the Harry K. Sickler Jr. Athletic Park at 6 p.m. when they host Corporal Miller.
Legion Notes: Hoover\’s walk was the only one issued by Webster…. Levinson was robbed of a likely triple in the sixth inning when he hit a deep drive to center that Kaack turned entirely around and sprinted after, put out his glove and made the catch…. After making many spectacular plays in the Tyrone Legion\’s first game at third base, not one ground ball was hit to Jesse Hertzler in the second game.
