What a difference a day makes! After performing well in all phases on Thursday night against Hoss’s, Martin Oil fell apart against that other team from Hollidaysburg, Locker Room. Composed of most of the starters and reserves from the Hollidaysburg High School baseball team, Locker Room scored in each of the first five innings in a game that was halted after six complete innings by lightning to post an 8-1 win at Bellwood.
After Locker Room (5-4) put up a pair of scores in the top of the first, and another in the second, Martin Oil came back to slice the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
With one out, Zack Tomchick ripped a double to left field. After Locker Room starting pitcher Aaron Harris got the second out on a strikeout, Blaze Winterstein came through with a clutch base hit to score Tomchick.
Harris shut the hosts out after that score however. Martin Oil put runners on base in every inning, but couldn’t again get that one clutch performance to drive in a run.
In the Martin Oil fifth, Chad Coho, Dustin Harris and Brandon Beech all singled with two outs. Coho stumbled rounding third base however and had to stay at the bag on Beech’s base hit and Harris got a ground ball to third by the next batter to end the threat.
Harris fanned seven and walked three to pick up the win in going the distance, while Earnie Kelley took the loss for Martin Oil giving up six runs, four earned on eight hits in four innings, with four strikeouts and one walk. Beech pitched the final two innings allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and one K.
David Rahoi led Locker Room on offense with three hits in as many trips to the plate, and Harris and Mike Albright each had two hits.
“We just couldn’t seem to do anything right tonight,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “We just have to get back on track tomorrow. The schedule doesn’t give us any time to cry about this one. The kids will just have do what needs to be done if we are going to keep going. It’s a long season in a short number of days.”
Martin Oil (6-3), which had their five-game win streak stopped is back in action today, for their eighth game in nine days, when they travel to Martinsburg Central High School to play Barkman Oil/Altoona First. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
