The Tyrone Legion played Friday\’s game much like they have this season. Costly errors hurt them early, but the offense and fielding came around later in the game to assure the Legion of victory.
The 9-5 rain-shortened win against Hoss\’s comes at a crucial time for the Tyrone Legion. With the win, Tyrone passed Hoss\’s in the standings for the final playoff spot in the George B. Kelley Federation. The win also gives the Tyrone Legion a tie breaker advantage over Hoss\’s if the teams are tied at the end of the season.
The Tyrone Legion dug themselves a ditch to climb out of in the first inning with four errors that allowed Hoss\’s to take an early 4-0 lead despite not registering a hit in the first inning.
Singles by Tyler Golden, Justin Schopp and Derrick Soellner loaded the bases with one out for the Legion in the bottom of the first, but they only managed to score one run on a Tyler Gillmen fielder\’s choice.
Both teams went quietly in the second and tthe third inning, but after Soellner ripped his second single of the game in the fourth inning, Gillmen changed the momentum with a two-run home run.
Tyler Hoover followed with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Two outs later, Matt Morrissey walked and stole second before Jamie Levinson brought both runners home with a single. Levinson went to second on an error, and Golden scored him with another single to put the Tyrone Legion ahead 6-4.
“Gillmen\’s home run turned this game around. It got everyone fired up in the dugout. They say hitting is contagious and that is very true with our team,” Tyrone Legion Manager Mike Boytim said.
Hoss\’s added a run in the top of the fifth inning on a Brandon Marasco RBI single, but they would get no closer.
Soellner singled again to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and courtesy runner Ben Lynn scored on a Hoover RBI single.
Tyrone hurler Levinson put Hoss\’s down in order in the sixth, and then doubled off the wall to begin the bottom of the inning. Golden moved him to third with a ground out before Schopp walked and stole second. The throw went into center field, allowing Levinson to score and Schopp to go to third.
Soellner drove home Schopp with his fourth hit of the game to put the Tyrone Legion ahead 9-5.
During the next batter, Tyler Gillmen\’s at bat, the bat flew out of Gillmen\’s hands from the downpour of rain, and Hoss\’s coach ordered his team off the field. The umpires called the game, and because they had played the allotted amount of innings, the game was declared final.
“We had a couple key performances today. One was Jamie Levinson who gave up some more unearned runs, but has pitched consistently well all season, and the other two were from Tyler Gillmen and Derrick Soellner who broke out of mini slumps to really help this offense get going today,” Boytim said.
The Tyrone Legion will play Hoss\’s one more time this season when the teams close out their regular season schedules on July 1st.
ReMax Realty will be in town tomorrow to take on the Legion at 5 p.m.
Legion Notes: Derrick Soellner went 4-4 in the game, becoming the first Legion player of the season to do so….Schopp went 4-5 earlier in the week against Park Furniture….Golden stretched his hitting streak to eight games and has multiple hits in seven of those….The Legion improves to 6-7 is one game away from .500 for the first time since they were 1-2.
