For the second time in as many days, the Tyrone Legion was done in by a big inning. Unfortunately for the Legion, also for the second time in two days, the opposition did not exactly rip the cover off the ball to beat them.
McMullen\’s Furniture used a four run fifth inning, in which they got only one hit, to beat the Tyrone Legion 7-5.
Tyrone struck first when Tyler Golden singled, moved to second on an error, and scored on Tyler Gillmen\’s single. Gillmen stole second and then came home on Justin Schopp\’s double.
McMullen\’s Furniture struck back in the bottom of the inning when Jake Settle followed Dan Conrad\’s double with a home run to tie the game.
Neither team put together much of a threat again until the fourth inning.
Bryan Plummer singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and went to third on an error. Wes Plummer put McMullen\’s Furniture ahead moments later with an RBI single.
McMullen\’s Furniture broke the game open in the next inning when Tyrone starter Tyler Gillmen lost his control.
Gillmen walked the first three batters before Bryan Plummer doubled to bring in two runs.
Reliever Mike Romano walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and allowed a sacrifice fly hit by Chad Mills, but then he got out of the inning without any further damage.
Gillmen put the Tyrone Legion back on the board with a home run to lead off the top of the sixth and cut the lead to 7-3. Schopp reached on an error, and Tyler Hoover singled to put runners at the corners with no outs, but McMullen\’s Furniture hurler Bryan Plummer was able to escape the jam by striking out Matt Morrissey and Romano before getting Donnie Conrad on a ground out.
Romano worked around two walks to pitch a scoreless bottom of the sixth and keep the game within reach.
“Mike has struggled a little bit throwing strikes when he has seen time on the mound this year, but for him to come in and keep us in this game was nice to see. Hopefully he can build off this and help out our pitching staff,” Tyrone Legion Manager Mike Boytim said.
Jared Rodgers, playing in his final George B. Kelley Federation game of his career, led off the top of the seventh by singling. After two outs, Gillmen drew a walk, and Schopp drove in Rodgers with a single. Hoover scored Gillmen with another single to put the tying run at first, but Plummer got Morrissey to pop out to end the game.
“We didn\’t give up, and I\’m proud of these guys. We were missing two starters who are hitting well over .300 and at times it showed today,” Boytim said.
The Tyrone Legion will finish a game against ReMax Realty at Vets\’ Field Saturday at 8 p.m. They will take on Sheetz directly after.
Legion Notes: Rodgers will be going to college Sunday, but his impact on the team may be one of the reasons the team\’s season might not end at the end of the regular season. Rodgers had a single against Hoss\’s, the team Tyrone is competing for the last playoff spot with, in the seventh inning that sparked a rally….Brandon Oswalt started at third base for the second time this season, but not one ball was hit his way….Romano tried a left handed drag bunt in the second inning, but missed the pitch.
