The 22nd season of live theater by the Tyrone Community Players offers a broad assortment of entertainment and, A Front Row Seat For Smiles.
The season kicks off with what is arguably Neil Simon’s finest comedy, Barefoot in the Park. Simon, a master at taking ordinary life situations and finding the humor housed therein, sets this two act comedy in a NYC brownstone apartment house. A newly married couple, six days to be exact, move into the top floor apartment in a building inhabited by an eclectic and eccentric array of tenants. Add to this the fact that the bride is a free spirited Bohemian and the groom a conservative corporate attorney and the audience has a recipe for hilarity, Simon style.
Barefoot in the Park will be presented in the parish hall of St. Matthew’s Church on October 21 and 22 under the direction of veteran Brian Williamson. Brian has worked with TCP as choreographer for Pippin and An American Cabaret, and has directed productions for Allegheny Highlands, Altoona Community Theater and, most recently, Gypsy at The Boal Barn.
The second offering in this season of smiles will be the Tony Award winning musical, Seussical. Based on a compilation of stories by Dr. Seuss, Seussical is a bright, energetic, imaginative night at the theater for audiences of any age. It is not a musical just for children, although young audiences will find a different type of magic within the show from adults.
Seussical, under the direction of Cindy Bennett with music direction by Brett Keith, combines musical styles as varied as calypso, gospel and rag time to tell the story of Horton The Elephant as he struggles with decisions that affect everyone in their daily lives.
Elephant or human, the trials and choices are remarkably similar.
Seussical will take the stage of the Tyrone Area High School on Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18, 2006.
The final choice for this season is a musical guaranteed to bring the audience into fits of laughter. Meshuggah-Nuns is the latest offering from the authors and composers of Nunsense and Nuncrackers. Yes, everyone’s four favorite nuns are back! This time they are taking a vacation, a cruise to be exact, on a Jewish cruise line aptly titled Eden Tours. The ship board entertainment is scheduled to be Fiddler On The Roof. Unfortunately, the cast is struck down with a mysterious sea-sickness and only Tevye and the nuns are left to entertain the rest of the passengers.
This is classic Nunsense humor, music and dance with a few new and hilarious twists thrown in. Meshuggah-Nuns, directed by Ed Kuhstos, director for TCP’s presentations of Nunsense and Nuncrackers, will be presented as TCP’s August, 2006 dinner theater production at The Tyrone Social Center.
