The Tyrone junior high football team had a rough afternoon in their season opener against Roosevekt Junior High School at Gray Vets Memorial Field on Thursday.
The Altoona junior high school scored three times in the first two quarters and rode that offensive push to a 20-0 victory over the Golden Eagle ninth graders, led by head coach Dan Plummer.
Corey Becker threw two touchdown passes, of 27 yards to Mike Treece and seven yards to Zack Veckov, and Varick Gaston ran 40 yards for another score for Roosevelt.
Tyrone was never able to get their offense in gear, although the Eagles defensive unit was able to hold a much bigger Roosevelt squad scoreless in the second half.
“This was a tough game to open our schedule,” commented Plummer. “They are a Quad-A school and they had a huge front line. In the first half, we couldn’t stop them. In the second half, we were able to do a little better. That will provide us a foundation to build upon for the remainder of the season.”
Levi Reihart led the Tyrone offense with 19 yards rushing.
“We have a lot of work to do to get better,” said Plummer. “Hopefully we can work at that and see results throughout the season.”
