While trick-or-treat night has always been a popular pastime, it can also be a night of mischief.
Many area parents must make a decision about whether or not to allow their children to participate in trick-or-treat night.
There have been steps taken to make this evening much safer, such as setting a specified time for visiting houses and making trick-or-treat earlier in the evening. There are also tips for both drivers and trick-or-treaters on Halloween night, such as for drivers to use extra caution and for kids to wear bright clothing and carry a flashlight.
This year, as in previous years, there is an alternative to the traditional trick-or-treat events, which is Light the Night. This event provides a fun and safe environment where kids will be entertained and parents can remain worry-free.
The first Light The Night at the Shaffer home located at 2114 Columbia Avenue, Tyrone was held in 2001 and the family is looking forward to ministering to children, teens and adults again this year on Thursday, October 27 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The event will feature the always popular sumo wrestling, games, food, live praise and worship and a special speaker at the rally following trick or treat.
The Shaffer family is asking for the community’s help in the areas of:
• manpower – with set up, running games and food and drink booths, crowd control, organizing and helping with a craft;
• donations of candy for prizes at game stations and/or to be given as door prizes;
• door prizes – such as gift certificates for as little as $5, T-shirts or promotionals advertising businesses, churches or organizations and
• financial gifts – to cover costs of items not donated.
Other items that could be donated include: hot dogs, rolls, ketchup, mustard, sauerkraut, napkins, hot chocolate, cups with lids, candies and small prize items.
Individuals may drop off items at the Shaffer home, or call 684-3547, and arrangements will be made to pick up items.
