The Bellwood-Antis junior high football teams remained undefeated with victories over Bald Eagle Area at Bellwood Memorial Stadium on Thursday evening.
The ninth grade squad proved that they weren’t superhuman-giving up the first points of the season scored against them. And the B-A junior high offense didn’t score 40 points for the first time. That said, however, The Little Blue Devils jumped out to a 30-0 halftime lead on the way to a 36-6 win to improve to 3-0.
The Blue Devils kicked off to Bald Eagle Area, forced a punt and moved right down the field for the first tally of the game, a three-yard TD by Matt Reams. Nate Gray tossed a two-point PAT pass to Tim Collier.
The Bellwood-Antis defense then came up with fumbles on the next two BEA series and turned both into touchdowns.
First Levi Hollen scored on a 14-yard pass from Gray and Drew Saylor rushed for the two-point conversion, then Randy Pfahler capped a short drive with three-yard TD rush. Saylor again added the two-pointer.
The final score of the first half came on a lightning bolt, when Pfahler fielded a BEA punt at his own 15 and raced to his left, cut back just slightly to his right and continued 85 yards for the score.
Bellwood-Antis added their final six-pointer in the third quarter, when Saylor went in on a 21-yard jaunt.
“We accomplished what we wanted to do, but we didn’t seem to have a lot of intensity,” explained Bellwood-Antis coach Charlie Burch. “We came out and got a good start and they couldn’t stop us on offense until we pulled the starters. We played well enough to get a nice win, but we can’t just go through the motions against every team on the schedule. On a positive note, the best-use scenario is that we won when we had a down week. It was good to get some different people in on the scoring this week. I think we will bounce back, enjoy this weekend and then start thinking about Mount Union.”
The seventh and eight graders defeated Bald Eagle Area 32-0 in the early game to improve to 3-0 on the season.
