The Tyrone Business and Professional Women’s Club is commemorating the 77th annual celebration of National Business Women’s Week, October 16-22, using the BPW/PA theme of “We Can Do It” featuring the famous poster, Rosie the Riveter. Presently, a goal of BPW is to help achieve pay equity for working women.
The first annual observance was held April 15-22, 1928 when BPW/USA President Lena Madesin Phillips opened NBWW with a nationally broadcasted speech.
In her remarks, she stated the purpose of the week was “to focus public attention upon a better business woman for a better business world.”
Throughout the years, NBWW has grown into a nationwide salute to all working women, as well as an opportunity to spotlight issues of importance to working women. US President Herbert Hoover was the first president to issue a letter recognizing the important role women play in the nation’s economy.
Business and Professional Women/USA, founded in 1919, promotes equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information. Local BPW clubs provide members with professional development programs, networking, participation in grassroots activism and opportunities to support scholarships for disadvantaged women. The BPW Foundation was established in 1956 and provides scholarships and disseminates research and studies on the status of working women and families.
Tyrone BPW is joined by women from Bellwood and Williamsburg and meets the second Monday of each month at LaScalia’s II Restaurant. Membership is open to any male or female and information is available from Linda Derman, President at 684-1386 or membership co-chairs, Eleanor Shaffer at 684-5541 or Darlene Singler at 684-0023.
