The Bellwood-Antis girls junior high basketball team had their work cut out for them on Tuesday afternoon at Williamsburg.
The Lady Blue Devils were facing a strong Williamsburg team that had won 13 of 14 games thus far during the 2005 season and had demolished the B-A girls by 24 points in their first meeting at Bellwood.
This time around, the young charges of B-A coach Chris Walker played a much tighter game, staying with the Lady Pirates for a half, before finally dropping a 27-14 decision.
Amanda Grannas continued a hit hand in leading Bellwood-Antis with five points.
Brittany Becker led the Williamsburg girls with seven points and Alyssa Brumbaugh and Jordan Hileman added six points each.
“Williamsburg has an excellent team, they\’re 15-1 for a reason,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Chris Walker. “We played them pretty tough today. I\’m pleased with our effort. We lost 42-18 the first time we played them. We played really well in the first half, trailing only 11-7 at half. We just couldn\’t put the ball in the basket in the third quarter. We were outscored 12-1 in the third quarter. They made some adjustments at half and we had some breakdowns on defense. The girls played hard today and if we can sustain that level over the last six games we can finish the season off strong.”
Bellwood-Antis hosts Glendale on Thursday at 4 p.m.
