Representatives of a Pittsburgh area developer were in Antis Township last week to make a presentation to the township’s planning commission for a possible Wal-Mart superstore.
Official plans have not been submitted yet according to township manager Jeff Zeigler. He said developers were looking for feedback from the township planners.
The store is being proposed for a site near the Pinecroft intersection with I-99. Zeigler said the proposed 185-thousand square foot store would be located on the same side of old Route 220 as the new LaScalia’s Restaurant. Zeigler said the proposed store would be similar in size to the Wal-Mart that is coming to Huntingdon.
He said plans call for the Antis store to have a gas station in addition to the other features normally associated with Wal-Mart superstores.
Zeigler said township supervisors will see the plans at their Dec. 6 meeting. He said store officials may submit a formal application to the township for land development sometime later in December or in January.
He said if they make the application in that time period, they anticipate a January 2007 opening provided everything goes well with township approval and construction.
If it becomes a reality, Zeigler said the proposed superstore will provide 300 to 400 new jobs.
According to information on its Web site, Wal-Mart is a global company with more than 1.3 million associates worldwide and nearly 5,000 stores and wholesale clubs across 15 countries. Last year, Wal-Mart generated more than $256 billion in global revenue, establishing a new record and adding more than $26 billion in sales. The company earned almost $9.1 billion in net income and grew earnings per share by more than 15 percent.
