The Howard Gardner Post No. 281 American Legion recently announced the winners of this year’s essay contest.
With the help of Steve Everhart, English teacher at Tyrone Area High School, the “Legion Essay Contest” was reestablished after an absence of a number of years.
The presentation of monetary awards was held December 7 at the high school, with past commanders Steve Sellers and Bob Nein representing the American Legion. The subject of this year’s essay was “Let Freedom Ring”.
The winners were: first place winner of $150, Alexis Pazmino, a junior, the daughter of Ruth Pazmino of Tyrone and second place winner of $75, Francesca Lambert, a junior, the daughter of Francois Lambert and Yong Sook Kim Lambert of Birmingham.
The winner of the local post contest will be entered in the 21st District competition to be held March 24, 2006. The district comprises 14 posts in Blair and Bedford counties.
The state final awards of $3,500 for first place, $3,000 for second place and $2,500 for third place scholarships will be announced May 15, 2006.
The local Legion is proud to sponsor such programs in hope that future leaders will realize what freedom is and that freedom isn’t free.
