Mary E. Harpster Sorrells, 90, of Edinburg, VA, formerly of Tyrone died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005 at Tandem Health Care, Woodstock, VA.
She was born April 1, 1915 in Tyrone, a daughter of the late David Harrison and Ida Josephine (Webner) Benton. She was twice married, first to Harry Eugene Harpster on June 20, 1936 in Tyrone. He died June 4, 1980. She was then married to James V. Sorrells who preceded her in death in 2000.
Surviving are two daughters, Sally Jo Maisano of Colorado Springs, CO, Gina Sue Scobie of Edinburg, VA; a son, Phillip Eugene Harpster of Tipton; two grandsons, Christopher Warren Pine of Tyrone, Michael Harpster of Tipton and a great-grandson, Wesley Michael Harpster of Tipton.
Prior to leaving Tyrone, Mrs. Sorrells was a 50-year member of the Wesley United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Senior Choir for 30 years, a Bible school teacher, the Woman’s Society, the Gertrude Black Sunday School Class and served on the church board under the Rev. Perry Bucke and Rev. Cummings. She also was a member of the Band Mothers and had operated one of the football booths at the Tyrone football field for a number of years.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 23, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Feller Memorial Home with Pastor Dennis Gable officiating. Interment will follow at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday at 10 a.m. until the time of the services.
