Bellwood-Antis traveled to Alexandria to wrestle Juniata Valley on Tuesday evening. The Blue Devils (2-3) won their second dual meet of the season using three forfeits and four falls to subdue the Green Hornets 48-27.
Mike Ballard (2-8) started things off by picking up a win by forfeit at 152, for Bellwood-Antis, although Juniata Valley got two pins and tech fall in the next four weight classes to jump out to a 17-9 lead.
Toby Erb came from behind to pin Ronnie Wilson at 160. Wilson (9-10) opened a 7-2 margin over Erb on a takedown and nearfall in the first period and two more back points to begin the second stanza, before Erb reversed Wilson to his back for the fall in 3:00. Ricky Lafond used seven takedowns and three sets of nearfalls to tech fall Garett Wyland (3-11) 23-6 in 6:00 at 171. Josh Heaster pinned B-A freshman Cody Smith (1-12) in 1:21 after building a 6-1 lead early.
The only win through that series of weights was a solid 9-5 effort by Josh Keagy at 189. The B-A senior, who is in his first year of wrestling, took leads of 2-0 and 4-3 through the first two periods and then used a penalty point reversal and takedown to wrap up the triumph.
At 275, B-A sophomore heavyweight Kris Morder (3-9) made short work of Matt Harnish, opening with a quick takedown and putting Harnish on his back at the edge of the mat for the fall in 0:34.
“Josh Keagy and Kris Morder both did a really nice job today,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson. “Josh for being a first-year wrestler is really coming around. Kris is holding his own this year as a heavyweight. All of our kids at the top of the lineup are going through growing pains, because they are all very inexperienced, but they’ll get there hopefully by the end of the year and we will get some more wins from those guys as the season progresses.”
After the two teams traded forfeits with the Hornets’ Kristin Williams taking a forfeit at 103 and Donnie Partner (7-9) getting one for the Blue Devils at 112, Juniata Valley holding on to a slim 23-21 lead.
At 119, B-A freshman Tim Collier (2-6) and Issac Moffet were deadlocked at 4-4 after the opening period, when Moffet notched a three-point nearfall in the second period and added a reversal and three backs in the third stanza for a 12-4 major decision.
“Timmy wrestled a real nice match at 119, he lost to that kid pretty badly on Saturday at the Zeigler Tournament,” said coach Wilson. “He hung in there close for a long time tonight.”
Juniata Valley had a 27-21 lead at that time, but would get no more points. From 125 through the rest of the dual meet, Bellwood-Antis would pick up a forfeit and get three first-period pins and a 6-3 decision.
Eli Colyer (9-3) decked Whitney Boyd in 1:05 at 125, Brandon Beech (8-8) pinned Adam Oldham in 0:26 at 130, Dustin Harris (6-9) received a forfeit at 140, and Josh Ervine (14-3) picked up the quickest fall of the night, showing Derrick Thompson the lights at 145, in 0:17.
At 135, Ricky Shawley registered takedowns in each of the first two periods and added a final stanza reversal to take a 6-0 lead over Willis Sneath, before Sneath escaped and took Shawley down to slice the score in half, but would get no closer than 6-3.
“We went through that stretch where we got a lot of falls and wins,” said Coach Wilson. “We kind of dominated the middle of the lineup which was nice for a change.
“Overall, there weren’t very many disappointments tonight, a lot of positives. We just have to keep working hard and getting better, and se what we can do by the end of the year.”
