Tyrone (8-1) scored wins in the final seven weight classes at Amesville, on Saturday to defeat Pine Grove 48-18 for their eighth straight win.
Heath Walk, cleared to wrestle just a day earlier began the push with a fall, at 189, and Donnie Conrad (215), Johnny Miller (275), Cody Weaver (103), T. J. Albright (112), Robert Waite (119) and Anthony Romano (125) followed with wins, after Pine Grove had taken an early 18-12 lead, after seven weight classes.
Walk (3-2) started quickly with a takedown and nearfall and then wrapped up the fall over Mike Griffith at 189, in his return to the mat. Conrad (8-7), back up to 215 with Walk in the lineup, reversed Brian Emerick in the second period and added a pair of penalty points in a 4-0 win. Miller (9-4) made quick work of Brad Brown, getting the pin in 0:44 at 275, the fastest fall of the day. Back at the top of the lineup, Cody Weaver (13-4) continued the parade by using a middle stanza reversal and final period nearfall to fashion a 5-0 decision over Justin Fegley.
Albright (10-1) was all over Trent Donofrio notching a pair of takedowns and three back points in the opening period and then adding another nearfall before getting the pin at the 3:29 mark. Waite (18-3) picked up his 83rd career victory with a takedown and quick fall over Larry Reiner in 1:41. Romano completed the streak with a fall over Jake Chamberlain in 4:48. After a scoreless first period, Romano escaped, took Chamberlain down and then traded reversals for a 5-2 advantage after two periods. Chamberlain took the bottom position to begin the third period and Romano turned him once for three back points and then for the fall to wrap up a 48-18 team triumph.
Pine Grove took a 12-0 lead at the beginning of the match. Josh Hunter lost to Tobie Zimmerman by injury default at 130, and Pine Grove picked up a win by forfeit at 135.
The Eagles stormed back with three wins to knot the team score at 12-12.
At 140, Jacob Smerekar (2-0) won his second straight match by outscoring Blaine Blampid 9-8. Smerekar and Blampid rolled each other around in the first period, with Smerekar coming out on top 7-5. The two grapplers then turned in a scoreless second period with Blampid riding the Tyrone junior for the entire period. In the third period, Blampid escaped and took Smerekar down to take an 8-7 lead, before Smerekar escaped and received a penalty point to pull out the slim 9-8 decision. Sam McCloskey (13-4) fell behind Ryan Reicher 5-2 after the first two periods at 145, but turned in a big final two minutes for a 9-6 win. McCloskey escaped, scored a takedown and three back points and added a penalty point to complete his comeback. At 152, with no score in the match between Shayne Tate and Charles Lengle, Tate (10-6) registered a takedown midway through the second period and pinned his opponent in 2:48.
Pine Grove’s Charles Aungst rode out Justin Schopp in the overtime tiebreaker after neither wrestler could score in the first overtime period for a 5-4 win at 160. Aungst scored takedowns in the first and third periods, while Schopp (10-7) turned Aungst for three back points in the second period and escaped in the third for a 4-4 tie in regulation. At 171, Charles Fegley utilized three takedowns to defeat James Updike (9-7) 7-3 to give Pine Grove an 18-12 advantage going into the Walk/Griffith match.
In the other dual meet wrestled on Saturday at the Moshannon Valley High School, Pine Grove downed the host Moshannon Valley squad 60-22 with Fred Disher (189) and Ryan Jacoby (130) getting pins for Mo Valley. The Knights also got a major decision by Brandon Murarik (140) and a forfeit win for 275-pounder Andy Stine.
Tyrone (8-1) will travel West Branch for their next match on Wednesday. The junior high match will begin at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity/varsity following at 7 p.m.
