Boyd W. Smith, age 92, a guest at Colonial Courtyard and a former Tipton resident died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 at 10:10 p.m. at Moran’s Home, Bellwood. He was born May 29, 1913 in Tyrone, the son of Harry D. and Pearl Wenrich Smith. On April 29, 1941 in Winchester, VA he was married to Mary Emma Budd who died Nov. 1, 1988. He is survived by one daughter, Kathleen, wife of Norma Eye of Tipton; one grandson, Michael and wife Shannon Eye of Tyrone and two step great grandsons Jordan and Ian Rhoat.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of the Tyrone High School class of 1931 and attended Pierce School of Business Administration, Philadelphia and Kansas Weslyn University, Salina KS.
He had been employed by Westvaco until he joined the Army on Jan. 14, 1941. He served as a Corporal in the 190th Field Artillery Group Headquarters Battery of the 1st U.S. Army during World War II.
He landed on Omaha Beach June 8, 1944 to participate in the third day of the battle of the still intensive fight for the possession of Normandy.
He was wounded during the battle, recuperated in a hospital in England and later returned to his group for the remainder of the war.
Mr. Smith received military decorations for the 190th Field Artillery Group Service, pre-Pearl Harbor service, the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, a ribbon for the European theater of operations with an Arrowhead and four Battle stars and the Purple Heart.
Upon his return from the Army in 1945 he was employed by Prudential Insurance Co. for 10 years and then by Tidewater Oil Company. He later became the Blair County distributor for Tidewater Oil (now Martin’s Oil of Bellwood.)
He was a member of the Tipton United Methodist Church. He was a member of Howard Gardner Post No. 218 American Legion, Tyrone B.P.O.E No. 212 and of the Descendants of the Civil War, Bellwood.
He liked to read, enjoyed driving in the country and liked to “eat out.”
Funeral service and flag presentation for Boyd W. Smith will be Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home with Reverend George Mauk officiating.
Interment in Eastlawn will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m.
