Three area high school basketball teams will participate in the District 6-AA tournament which begins on Monday, Feb. 20, 2006.
In a double header at the Hollidaysburg Senior High School, the Tyrone boys will play the Bishop Guilfoyle boys on Monday at 6 p.m., and the Tyrone girls will play the Southern Huntingdon girls in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. on the same court.
The Bellwood-Antis boys basketball squad will play Marion Center in the second game of the night on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Central Cambria High School in Ebensburg at 7:30 p.m.
The Tyrone boys (9-14), the number 13 seed in the boys half of the tournament, have played the number four seed Bishop Guilfoyle Marauders (16-8) twice during the 2005-06 season, dropping a 79-64 decision at Tyrone, on Dec. 13, and falling 78-66 to BG, at the Marauders Pleasant Valley Blvd. home court on Jan. 18. Last year, the Eagles defeated Bishop Guilfoyle twice by close scores (62-57, 59-55) during the regular season, but then were upset 59-55, by the Marauders in a first-round playoff contest.
Bishop Guilfoyle dropped a 48-45 decision to Bald Eagle Area on Wednesday night, in a special, playoff for the MAC Section II Conference.
The winner of the first round contest, will play the winner of a first round game between fifth seed Penns Valley (19-5), the Juniata Valley League champion, and 12th seed Purchase Line (12-12).
The Tyrone girls (11-12), the 12th seed, haven’t played Southern Huntingdon, but has played two other Juniata Valley opponents, defeating Bellwood-Antis 65-28 and Williamsburg 75-44. However, Southern Huntingdon, the number five seed, has racked up a 19-5 record, while Bellwood-Antis (11-13) and Williamsburg (14-10) are not the same teams as the senior-oriented Lady Rockets, who regularly start four seniors. A season ago, the Lady Eagles dropped their first round game to Bishop McCort 56-34. The winner will battle number four seed Central (17-7), the undefeated (10-0) Laurel Highlands Division I champ.
Tickets for the Tyrone boys and girls games may be purchased Monday in the Tyrone Athletic office until 3:30 p.m. Pre-game sale of tickets will be $5.00 per ticket for adults, and $2.00 per ticket for students. At the gate at Hollidaysburg, all tickets will cost $5.00.
The Bellwood-Antis boys (11-13) return to the district playoffs for the first time since the 2002-03 Blue Devil squad went 23-5 and captured the district title. Over the previous two seasons, the Blue Devils won only a total of 14 ballgames. The number 10 seed Blue Devils will face number seven seed Marion Center (16-8), following a girls game between Marion Center and Forest Hills which tips off at 6 p.m. at Central Cambria High School. The winner will play number two seed Westmont (18-6).
Tickets for the Bellwood-Antis/Marion Center game may be purchased in the Bellwood-Antis School District Office on Tuesday from 7:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Admission price for adults will be $5.00 per ticket, and ?students will be $2.00 per ticket. All tickets will cost $5.00 at the game.
