The Bellwood-Antis School Board met on Tuesday to discuss an array of topics, including several personnel issues.
Evan Hughes started the evening off with a powerful dramatic presentation of the Steve Mason poem, “The Wall Within”.
Following the reading, board members took action on several items including the approval of Joe Edmiston, Jessica Turek and five speech team members traveling to Dallas, Texas on June 17-24 to attend the National Tournament at a cost of $7,295 to the district.
According to high school principal Diane Williams, the speech team will travel to several areas throughout the country this year.
“I’m sure they will represent us well,” said Williams.
The board also approved the athletic training agreement between Drayer Physical Therapy Institute of Altoona and the school district for athletic training services for the 2006-07 school year in the amount of $10,000, up from $7,500 from 2005-06.
Under personnel, the board approved John Hayes as Athletic Director for the 2006-07 school year. They also accepted, with regret, the resignation of Deborah Davinsizer as custodian and Susan Springer as middle school special education teacher.
Long-term substitutes were approved, including Rebecca Brown, second grade; Jennifer Burrows, third grade and Allison Clabaugh in seventh grade.
Marie J. Enedy was approved as a full-time middle school special education teacher retroactive to February 27 at a prorated salary of $182.12 per day.
Substitute teachers were also approved, including Ann Chirdon, art; Sara Davis, biology; Timothy Hooper, physics and general science and Carol Stoltz, social studies and mathematics.
Steve Conlon was named as assistant varsity boys basketball coach for the final two weeks of the season at a stipend of $342.28.
Both the middle and high school principals reported that spring sports have begun, regardless of the ever changing weather and the board approved the following volunteers for the 2006 spring sports season, pending receipt of appropriate paperwork: Ken Swanson, track; Bill Edmiston, track; George Bell, track; Galen Bickel, track; John Schmittle, baseball; Tom Geishauser, baseball; Tim Kovac, baseball; Jessica Sprankle, track and Wendy Wilson, track.
Also, Technology Coordinator, Mike Lingenfelter, was approved to teach computer classes, which will be offered to the community, at a rate of $40 per hour for a maximum of 20 hours.
Lingenfelter thanked the board for the opportunity to teach the classes and said the first three classes will include wireless safety; what can be done with windows for free and word.
