On Saturday, May 27, starting at 9 a.m. Tyrone’s Women’s and Rotary Clubs and Western PA Conservancy will host a garden planting extravaganza in Tyrone.
Volunteers from Women’s Club will meet at Burger King parking lot, and Rotary Club will meet in the American Legion parking lot. As with all Conservancy gardens, these are community inspired, and are planted and maintained by volunteers.
It’s almost a magical transformation-seemingly overnight – blooming flowers appear at key highly visible locations throughout the region-from small local intersections to huge boulevards and highway medians. This springtime change could not take place without the thousands of volunteers who help make the gardens a reality each year.
Since 1972, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has helped develop hundreds of greening projects in over 170 communities in 20 counties of Western Pennsylvania. In each location a dedicated group of community volunteers make the planting possible. People come as families, as community service volunteers from corporate partners, as neighbors and local officials. The purpose of the gardens is to add visible and vibrant assets to communities in the region, making them more attractive places to live, work and raise families.
“We’ll be planting hundreds of annual flowers on Saturday, and we are always delighted to have new volunteers join with us to work in our community,” said Western Pennsylvania Conservancy Garden Steward Rose Black. “We need people to come out for a day to plant gardens, as well as people to watch over the gardens throughout the season.”
If you’re interested in helping improve our community, please show up at either the Burger King or American Legion parking lots. Please wear appropriate clothing, shoes, bring gloves and a kneeling pad if you like. Some small digging tools are available.
