From the dynamic sounds of an 18-piece big band to the delightful fun of an outdoor movie, area residents can enjoy two events this weekend in Tyrone.
The Fun Friday series concludes this evening with the final Family Fun Movie beginning at dusk in the M&T lot on Tenth Street. This exciting animated film is about a heroic robot who puts aside his own dreams in order to save the city.
Outdoor movies are made possible by a joint partnership between the Emmanuel Baptist Church and the Tyrone Arts Council. In the event of rain the movie will be held in the Emmanuel Baptist Church on Tenth Street.
Summer Sunday concerts continue on Sunday with the energizing sound that only an 18-piece big band can provide. Located on the amphitheater stage in picturesque Reservoir Park, the “Keystone Society of Swing” big band will offer area residents a trip back in time as they perform a large repertoire of music from the 1930s to the 1950s. Combining the classic arrangements of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie with some of the best from today’s foremost composers has been the trademark of this talented band.
The “Keystone Society of Swing” was organized in 1985 as a means to preserve the classic chart hits with kindred musicians. That original desire has led to the current band which performs throughout the central Pennsylvania region. The musicians come from a variety of communities in Centre County and volunteer their time in order to preserve this unique part of our musical heritage.
Summer Sunday concerts begin at 6 p.m. at the Reservoir Park Amphitheater. Audience members should bring a blanket or chair for seating. In the event of rain, Summer Sunday concerts will be held in the Lutheran Church on Logan Avenue.
All summer concerts are free of charge and made possible by a grant from the PA Council on the Arts, a state agency, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and Tyrone Borough. For additional information contact the ArtsLine office at 684-ART2.
