A skillful (or lucky) golfer may be taking home a brand new car from the ninth annual Humane Society Golf Tournament scheduled for Wednesday, September 6 at Scotch Valley Country Club.
Tournament organizer Dan Lawruk said fees for the event include golf and a cart, refreshments on the course, lunch, an awards banquet with hors d’oeuvres, locker room facilities, a long drive prize, closest to the pin prize, a putting contest and the awarding of a new car for a hole in one. In addition, the event will offer many door prizes.
The tournament will include a special appearance by Mrs. Pennsylvania, Joyelle Scavone (a Hollidaysburg resident). Also participating in the tournament is a special “media all-star” team that consists of WTAJ-TV Chief Meteorologist Joe Murgo, Q-94 morning DJ and Program Director Adam Erickson, WJAC-TV news anchor Marty Radovanic and Altoona Curve General Manager, Todd Parnell.
Major sponsors of the benefit outing include Pepsi and Subway, with dozens of other area businesses contributing.
The cost is a $440 entry fee for a 4-person team. Individuals can sign up for $110. Tee sponsorships are $100 and greens can be sponsored for just $75 and are still available to local businesses and individuals. For $25, non-participants can attend the awards ceremonies with hors’doeuvres.
The event will begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 with a scramble format.
Last year’s event drew over 20 teams including an “all-star media team” who competed in the event which raised nearly $10,000 to help the homeless animals at the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society (1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona).

Also, there are other ways for area residents to help out the animals at the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society.
First, there is a way to help out an animal and be recognized for it, or a way to honor a friend, relative or pet. For $100, an individual can sponsor one of CPHS’s 17 large outdoor runs for dogs.
According to CPHS, the enclosures are great for canines to get some outside time with plenty of space. The runs have awnings to protect the dogs from the hot, bright sun of summer.
The runs were donated and constructed for the shelter several years ago by the DeGol family.
The sponsorship provides the individual with a nice acknowledgment plate that CPHS attaches to the run, and the plate will stay there for an entire year. Reserve a plate now since there is a limited number. Call 942-5402 and ask for Ingrid.
Finally, web surfers who visit CPHS’s site now have an easy and secure way to help homeless animals, according to CPHS executive director, Dave Hopkins.
The CPHS site features a special “Make a Donation to CPHS” link on its home page. Clicking on the link will take internet users to a site that gives easy instructions on how to make a donation that will go directly to the agency. The link features “PayPal” but also allows donations to be made simply through the use of credit cards (accepting Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Discover).
Those donating will receive confirmation of their gift immediately online with a follow-up acknowledgment from the shelter via regular mail.
According to Hopkins, the donation link is secure, and all funds go directly to help pay for the care and handling of homeless animals at the CPHS shelter.
