The Tyrone Golden Eagles junior varsity football team defeated the Huntingdon Bearcats on Monday night at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field in dramatic fashion.
Tyrone’s Solomon Beck recovered two fumbles in the opening period but two consecutive “roughing the kicker” penalties kept the Eagles “D “ on the field for most of the first half after the Tyrone defense stopped Huntingdon dead.
Tyrone did manage a 33-yard field goal attempt but Dustin Rudasill’s kick was short.
“Our defense was phenomenal, both teams played their hearts out,” beamed a very happy junior varsity head coach Darren Elvey. “I told them if you are hustling and playing hard that's all that matters.”
The second half was all Tyrone as they held the Bearcats to three possessions which amounted to a total of only 22 yards of offense. In two games in the early season, the Tyrone JayVee defense has alowed just six points scored against them.
The Eagles alternated running backs Josh Crowell, who fininshed with 68 yards and Mark Mingle, who finished with 104 yards. With these two grinding out yard after yard, it opened the door for the climactic finish.
Sophomore quarterback Ben Ingle hooked up with Rudasill from 22 yards out with just 30 seconds on the fourth-quarter scoreboard clock to put the exclamation point on this one. Rudasill kicked the extra point for the 7-0 win.
A jubilant Elvey commented about the play, “ We called it and weren't sure what would happen, but it worked out.”
Tyrone is now 1-1 on the season and will play Lewistown next Monday at home beginning at 6 p.m.
Eagle Bits: Beck also had two sacks…. Mingle had a 52 yard run….Jesse Walk had two sacks…Because of a Tyrone penalty Rudasill had to kick the extra point twice and was successful both times!…. Ingle thwarted Huntingdon’s final drive with a interception.
