As you go about your day, you don’t want to get in Junie’s way!
Denver “Junie” Smith, a native of Tyrone, who now resides in Louisville, Ohio, where he taught and coached in the Louisville school system for 27 years, before retiring in 1982, is on the run again.
Smith has participated in 28 Masters track and field competitions, while finishing 26 of them. Along the way he has won 10 National Decathlon championships.
On July 15-16, Junie competed in the 2006 USATF National Championships and Masters multi-event national decathlon championship in Seattle, Washington. Smith was one of two decathletes in their age class to set a new American and World Masters record.
At the USA National Masters Outdoor Track and Field competition held in Charlotte, NC, during the first week of August, Smith competed in six events, including the pole vault, high jump, 80 meter hurdles, discuss, javelin and the triple jump. With the events being run at night to try to stay away from 100-degree daytime temperatures, Smith. 81, captured four gold medals and two silvers to place either first or second in every event, in the 80-85 age group.
