With Christmas just over a week away many area churches have special services planned in the coming days. Several churches provided information to The Daily Herald.
While many events are scheduled for Christmas Eve, which falls on a Sunday this year, this weekend is also packed with Christmas activities and services including Birmingham Presbyterian Church’s Christmas candlelight service on Sunday night at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to join Birmingham Presbyterians for a night of fellowship and special music. Kate Coltabaugh will share her vocal talents with those in attendance. And this year, Susy Winters will not only provide the organ music, she will also perform a violin solo. Pastor Paul Bottenfield will lead the service and his wife Sue will provide musical accompaniment on the piano throughout the service.
Birmingham Presbyterian’s Sunday morning service begins at 10:30 a.m. where Sue Bottenfield will also provide piano accompaniment for the organ.
Bible Baptist Church of Tyrone, located behind Bressler’s Food Mart, is planning two special services this Sunday. At morning worship, beginning at 10:30 a.m., the theme will be “The True Light of Christmas” with special music provided by Bill and Judy Jones of About Him Ministries.
Then in the evening, at 6 p.m., there will be a special service on the Feast of Dedication found in John chapter 10 and its significance to our Savior, Jesus Christ.
All are invited to attend the services. Refreshments will follow both the morning and evening service.

Northwood Baptist Chapel will be presenting a children\’s Christmas program with puppets on Sunday at 6 p.m. Mrs. Jane Miller is the director. Following the program, there will be a Christmas party with desserts at the activity center. All are welcome. The church is handicapped accessible, and questions may be left on Pastor Tangen\’s answering service at 684-3958.
Tyrone Presbyterians will feature Reverend Norman Huff and a Civil War Christmas carol this weekend at their 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday.
Following the recent departure of Presbyterian Pastor Robert Dunkelberger, Reverend Huff was invited to lead worship services for December, January and February.
This weekend he will lead Tyrone Presbyterians in an Advent peace service with a theme from Zechariah 9:10 – “He will proclaim peace to the nations.”
Also, the church choir will perform poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s miraculous peace carol entitled, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”.
Information provided by the church read, “How miraculous that on Christmas day 1863, Longfellow could compose this carol after his wife died in a house fire, his eldest son suffered a bullet wound to the spine and nearly 50,000 soldiers already had died at Gettysburg.
“Today, as American soldiers still die and Americans still feel depressed, Tyrone Presbyterians, along with Reverend Huff, invite folks to join them at 10:30 a.m. on December 17 as they offer the uplifting message of peace on earth, good-will to men.”
New Life Worship Center in Pinecroft, presents “Mary Did You Know” this weekend. Visitors are asked to bring canned goods for admission. The show will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. and again Sunday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Warriors Mark United Methodist Church will hold service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday along with the adult choir Christmas musical.
And finally, Olivet Baptist Church, 508 Cambria Street, Bellwood will present the message “The Faith of a Teenager” this weekend. Service times are 9 and 10:30 a.m. For more information, visit the church online at www.obchurch.com.
