The Tyrone Area girls tennis team had gone for a while without a win, but no longer are they winless.
The Lady Eagles posted their first win in more than two years on Thursday at Huntingdon.
With no wins in singles in their first four matches in 2008, the Tyrone girls swept the Huntingdon girls winning all five singles matches and the number one doubles match to defeat the Lady Bearcats 6-1.
MaryElyn Hunter, Elena Myers, Emily Thompkins, Amy Lewis and Laura Thompson all won their singles matches, and Hunter teamed with Elsita Balvanera to win the number one doubles match as well.
Tyrone coach Mike Hample pointed out that the number two singles win by Myers over Lady Bearcat Emily Papaphanasakis was a long match in a 6-4, 6-3 win for Myers, and that Thompson’s number five win was even longer. Thompson dropped the first game of her match against Keri Palmer 3-6, then won the second game 7-5 and the third 8-6 in a tiebreaker.
“We finished all the other singles matches and both doubles matches and Laura was still playing,” said Hample. “It was nice to come away with the victory. The girls have worked hard and it finally paid off.”
