The Golden Eagles junior high squads traveled to Indian Valley on Tuesday, where Indian Valley was hoping to avenge an earlier loss. The Tyrone ninth graders struggled, but were able to post a hard-fought 45-39 victory to improve their record to 11-4.
Tyrone was forced to going to a smaller lineup due to illnesses which left them without the services of low post players Mark Bryan and Jordan Taylor.
The Eagles jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter behind a nine point scoring burst by Andy Brokenshire who was unstoppable.
“I told the kids that Indian Valley was going to be much tougher this time around, and that winning in there gym is not an easy thing to do. Without the services of our two big men, all the other guys stepped up and contributed to this win,” said Tyrone Coach Pat Campbell. Each team scored 10 points in the second quarter with Tyrone holding onto a six-point advantage, 25-19.
After half-time Tyrone looked like they might be able to pull away going up 34-23, but Indian Valley came storming back with a 10-0 run. Including the first seven points of the fourth quarter Indian Valley was able to take a 36-35 lead.
However, a solid defense and some clutch three point shooting from Brokenshire, and Levi Reihart enabled the Eagles to pull away in the last stanza.
Brokenshire led the Eagle ninth graders with 18, Dillon McKeehan had eight points, and Levi Reihart scored seven points.
In the eighth grade game, the Eagles used a tenacious full court man to man press to beat the Warriors 40-24, and a balanced scoring attack with seven players getting on the scoreboard.
Tyrone took a 24-10 advantage into the locker room at halftime, and then matched Indian Valley nearly point-for-point in the second half to improve their season mark to 11-4.
High scorers for the Tyrone eighth graders were Richie Stever with 10 points, Jimmy Ferguson and John Jiin eight points each and Jordan Faretta and Kevin Seiner scored seven points each.
