NARFE meeting
Members of Chapter 328, National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association met January 12 at noon at King’s Restaurant, 3000 Sixth Avenue, for lunch and a business meeting.
It was decided to once again have the annual August picnic at American Legion Park in Hollidaysburg and the Christmas party at Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood.
The next meeting will be at noon at King’s on Friday, February 9. All active and retired Federal employees and spouses are welcome.
Kids Bible basketball camp
Hey Kids! Kids Bible basketball camp at the Warriors Mark United Methodist Church is almost here.
The kids Bible basketball camp is ready to take kids to the next level in their game on Saturday, February 10. From 1 to 3 p.m., kids will experience a clinic, a message, music and games for kids in K through fifth grades. Parents are encouraged to stay around and see what surprises may unfold each day. Jim Kilmartin from Joshua House will be the featured speaker on February 10.
No registration fee required. There will be a love offering basket for donations.

Just Desserts the second Annual Valentines Day Nightclub will be held Saturday, February 10 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Collecting donations for CPHS
Cub Scout Pack 320 will be collecting donations of pet food items, litter, and cleaning supplies (detergent, bleach, etc.), as a community service project to benefit the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society through Feb. 10. TACO Radio Auction
The Tyrone Area Community Organization’s Annual Radio Auction is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, February 10 and 11. The radio auction will be aired live over WTRN 1340 AM. Saturday, February 10, the auction is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:30 a.m., after the morning news. Sunday, February 11, the auction is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
For that weekend, The Daily Herald office will once again be transformed into the headquarters for the TACO Radio Auction, where the items and the phone lines will be located. Individuals can participate by listening to TACO members describe the items over the airwaves, and if anyone is interested in bidding on an item, they may simply call 684-4000; 684-4001 or 684-4603 with an offer.
Items can currently be viewed at The Daily Herald window in downtown Tyrone.

Chocolate Festival
The Tyrone Church of the Brethren, on the corner of Adams and 18th street, is having a Chocolate Festival from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday February 11 to raise money for Disaster Relief ministries.
Admission is free for those who want to purchase treats to eat in or take out, bid on the Silent Auction for chocolate gift baskets, or shop in the Sweetheart Sweet Shoppe to buy a gift for your sweetie.
Several of the churches bakers and confectioners will be competing in a Chocolate Tasting Competition. To be involved in the tasting and judging of entries a ticket must be purchased for a small fee.
Come help raise money for Disaster Relief efforts and enjoy the fellowship that surrounds this event.

Natural Biodiversity representative to speak to LJRA
Scott Millberg, projects coordinator for the non-profit conservation group, “Natural Biodiversity”, will be presenting to the Little Juniata River Association during their monthly meeting on February 13 at the Tyrone Snyder Public Library in the Community Room at 7 p.m. The Little Juniata River Association is a local non-profit group whose mission is to monitor, preserve and improve the Little “j” as a cold-water resource. The public is welcome to attend.
According to Scott, “Natural Biodiversity” is focused on the control of herbaceous, invasive species, such as Japanese Knotweed, which is known to have established itself along the banks of the Little Juniata and elsewhere in the Juniata Watershed. “Natural Biodiversity” and Southern Alleghenies Conservancy have recently received federal funding from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service grant program. This project will access the affect of the invasive species presence on the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), Conservation Securities Program (CSP), and stream bank fencing projects. Eventually a planning committee will be formed to develop an invasive species management plan, pinpointing locations and identifying best control practices, beginning with the lands along the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River.
Blair Co. Genealogical Society
The Blair County Genealogical Society will hold their monthly membership meeting at the Roller Hojeth Memorial Library, 431 Scotch Valley Road, Hollidaysburg, Thursday, February 15, 2007 at 7 p.m.
Rob Wilson will be the speaker for the evening. The topic will be “Interpreting Tax Assessment Lists and Returns”.
Early Tax Lists are a treasure trove of information. The presentation covers: basic tax laws, tax collection procedures, types of tax lists, how to extract and interpret what is contained in the lists from a genealogical perspective, where to find tax lists, how to organize the extracted information, how to add information to your family tree about the lives of your ancestors. There will be handouts and several case studies.
Rob has transcribed over 20,000 tax entries from Huntingdon County, in preparation for a new book that should be completed this spring. He has been doing genealogy for the better part of ten years, with a focus the last three years in transcribing tax lists. The program is free and open to the public.
Women’s Day
Emmanuel Baptist Church of Tyrone will be hosting a Women’s Day with the theme, Relationships, on Saturday, February 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This will be a day of fun, fellowship and growth.
There will be a time of worship, a large group session with Julia Wiley as the main speaker, breakout sessions, a skit, lunch and more.
Some of the breakout sessions may include: a craft, finances, parenting, daily quiet times, canning, etc.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Medication check-ups offered at Tyrone Senior
Community Center
Blair Senior Services, Inc. and Tyrone Hospital are co-sponsoring “Medication Check-Ups” at the Tyrone Senior Community Center on Thursday, March 8. The private, individual “medication check-ups” will be provided by Mr. Dan Irvin, PharmD, a pharmacist at Tyrone Hospital. The “check-ups” will include a review of prescribed medications, checking for drug interactions, review of medication precautions, medication side effects, and the effects of any over the counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal remedies.
The “medication check-ups” are open to individuals age 60 or older as well as family members or other caregivers who assist with medication. Appointments are required and a limited number of appointments are available. To make an appointment for a medication check-up call Tyrone Hospital at 684-6348. The Tyrone Senior Center is located at 505 West 3rd Street in Tyrone.
Preschool vision screening
Preschool vision screenings will be held March 9 at Tyrone Presbyterian Preschool at 9:15 a.m.
2007-08 registration now open
The Warriors Mark United Methodist Church announced 2007-08 registration is now open. The church offers a program for three, four and five-year-olds to attend class three days a week. Classes are held from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Tyrone History Museum closed for winter
The Tyrone History Museum is closed for the winter. The museum will reopen Sunday, April 1, 2007.
