In the wake of so many recent disasters how often have you said, “I wish I could help those folks but I don’t know how?”
The American Red Cross offers a course and an outstanding opportunity for individuals to become a volunteer. The course is called “Disaster Services Training”.
The word disaster is used to define the aftermath of many events including tornados and floods. The American Red Cross Disaster Services Training course is about the recovery end of those disasters. It’s about helping neighbors put their lives back together.
Earlier this month, youth and adult members of Boy Scout Troop 92 attended American Red Cross Disaster Services Training at the Tipton Fire Hall.
Dan Boyles and C.J. Terrana from the American Red Cross Southern Alleghenies Chapter, located at 4100 Fifth Avenue, Altoona, visited the Tipton fire hall to present the class for the troop.
Troop 92 became the first Boy Scout troop in the Chief Logan District and in the Penns Woods Council to get this training. This is part two of the troops’ emergency training. Part one is the troop’s yearly American Red Cross first aid and CPR training provided by Joe Beeler, an American Red Cross instructor.
Sixteen other troops in the Chief Logan District plan to have this training by April.
The culmination of this training will be an emergency preparedness weekend, including a competition, which will be judged by the local chefs affiliated with the Southern Alleghenies chapter of American Culinary Federation and the American Red Cross, based on their ability to purchase, prepare and serve a disaster services style meal.
This will be held the last weekend in April when the troops from Chief Logan District will meet at the PPG field in Tipton to compete against each other.
