The Tyrone softball team completed a busy week on Friday by hosting a tough Hollidaysburg team at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex. Tied 2-2 after the opening at bats, Tyrone was shut out the rest of the way in absorbing a 4-2 loss.
Hollidaysburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead to begin the ballgame, but the Lady Eagles came right back.
Answering the two-spot, Ashley Pennabaker drilled a double to lead off and Lindsay Christine singled to drive her in. Megan Turiano walked and Kim Cherry had a single which allowed Christine to score.
Turiano advanced to third base and Cherry to second, but Hollidaysburg pitcher Jackie Smith left them there, getting out of the inning without further damage.
Hollidaysburg (1-1, after a final inning loss to Mount Union earlier in the week) scored single tallies in both the fourth and fifth innings and Smith, who struck out 10 Tyrone batters, and walked one, protected the lead for the win.
“We looked like a ball team today,” said Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher. “Considering this was the fourth day playing in a row, we played well. We still had a couple of errors which hurt us.”
Game Notes: Pennbaker’s lead-off double was the only extra-base hit of the game….Laura Thompson struck out two and walked one for the Lady Eagles….Kaitlyn Erb had two RBI for Hollidaysburg ….Tyrone (0-3) travels to Orbisonia to play Southern Huntingdon today at 4:30 p.m.
