Tyrone High’s girls and boys track and field teams launched their 2007 dual meet season at Mt. Union yesterday, with the boys logging a convincing victory over the Trojans thinclads in their first dual meet engagements of the spring. The Golden Eagles out-pointed Mt. Union 106-44, while the Lady Eagles lost a heartbreaker to the Mt. Union girls 75-73.
Head coach Tony Yaniello recorded his 200th victory at the helm of the Golden Eagle boy’s track and field team. Tyrone won 16 of the 18 events-nailing all three relays- to pick up right where they left off last year when they won the Mt. Athletic Conference Championship.
Tyrone swept all three relays and won every running event for a 69-18 advantage on the track. The jumpers dominated all four jumps including a sweep in the pole vault.
Ben Ingle (400, 800, 1600 and 3200 relay) had one of his best days in his young career winning four first places. John Franco (100, 200, 400 relay) dominated the sprints winning three events. Ethan Etters (long and triple Jump, 400 relay) placed first in the jumps. State qualifier, Phil Kreckel won the pole vault and ran on the winning 400 relay team with high jump winner Levi Riehart, Etters, and Franco. Sophomore, Ross Black won both hurdles.
“The exciting thing about this years team is the fact that all but one of the 16 first places recorded against Mt. Union were scored by underclassmen,” Tyrone’s boys coach Tony Yaniello said. “It’s going to be a fun year watching this years group grow and their work ethics are fantastic. They are not even close to where they will be by the end of the year.”
On the other half of the meet’s card, the Lady Eagles won 10 of the 18 events but could not match the depth of Mt. Union with low numbers competing this season. An injury to sprinting star Kayla Patton also hurt the Lady Eagles bid for win number one.
District champion and state place winner Liz Tepsic won her usual four events to lead the Lady Eagles.
Two outstanding freshmen, Rachel Emigh (pole vault, long jump) and Lizzy Shields (400, 800) made their presence known on the varsity level with double wins.
“Rachel is already pole vaulting higher as a freshman than Lady Eagle standout and state placewinner Amy Gilliland when she was a freshman,” Coach Yaniello said.
Winning 200 meets, Coach Yaniello says is a tribute to the athletes who believed in our program and worked hard to achieve their goals. “’I personal have had great satisfaction teaching kids and watching them achieve.’ It’s extremely satisfying to see not only the best athletes achieve but also the average athlete reach their goals. Coaching 3 state champions and over 40 district champs have helped put Tyrone on the map as one of the most respected track and field programs in the district and state.”
Next up for the Tyrone thinclads is a home meet with Southern Huntingdon on April 10th.
