It’s nice for a baseball team to be able to establish a routine early in the season, and then hopefully create a rhythm for the long season.
Thanks to rain and sub-freezing temperatures last Wednesday and Thursday, the Tyrone Golden Eagles probably won’t have that luxury this season.
The original plan was for the Eagles to play three games last week, but following a 6-3 win over Penns Valley on Monday – a victory that allowed Tyrone to open the season 2-0 – the team’s next two games against Mount Union and Philipsburg-Osceola were erased by the elements. Now, Tyrone will play three consecutive MAC Division III games this week with just a pair of games under its belt.
It starts on the road today against West Branch, followed by another trip tomorrow to Claysburg-Kimmel. Moshannon Valley comes to town on Thursday for a game at the Harry K. Sickler Sports Complex.
The hectic nature of the schedule will only increase over the next several weeks, with the Eagles facing a four-game schedule the following week, as well as trying to find time to make up the games they missed last week.
Trusting the Tylers
Two games is a small time for evaluations by baseball standards, but if there’s one trend that appears to be emerging it’s the steady play of seniors Tyler Gillmen and Tyler Golden, who are picking up right where they left off in their junior seasons.
Both Golden and Gillmen have registered pitching victories, and both drove in three runs last week against Penns Valley. Gillmen is batting 4-for-6 on the season (.666), and Golden is 3-for-8 (.375). Only one other player – centerfielder Justin Schopp (2) – has multiple hits.
Golden picked up the win in the season-opener, pitching five scoreless innings against Williamsburg, while Gillmen registered the save before getting his own pitching win against the Rams.
