So often at the high school level championship teams are made by returning senior leadership. That being said one must look at this year Golden Eagle boys team as a work in progress. With only one returning senior letterman, (Pole Vaulter and State Qualifier Phil Kreckel), the boys team must rely on a very talented group of underclassmen to develop quickly for a successful season.
The young Golden Eagle boys team defeated Bishop Guilfoyle 81-69 and remained undefeated at 3-0 on the Tyrone Track Thursday.
“My coaches and I spend a lot of time teaching with such a young group,” Tyrone coach Yaniello said. “We are never going to be as good as some teams early on in the season, but we always peak at the right time running, jumping and throwing our best at the district and state meets.”
The Iron Men in the throws played a huge role out scoring BG 26-1 led by Ty Wilson’s (Shot Put, Discus) first places. With Tyrone leading 73-68, John Shaffer and Bo Latchford placed first and second in the javelin, the last contested event of the day, to seal the win over BG.
Ben Ingle (400, 800, and 3200 relay) was the only triple winner on the day. Ty Wilson (Shot, Discus) was a double winner. Dustin Elder (3200), Phil Kreckel (Pole Vault), Ethan Etters (Triple Jump) and John Shaffer (Javelin) won individual events.
“Bishop Guilfoyle has some quality runners on the track,” coach Yaniello said. “We saw two of the best sprinters in the district with Smith from BG edging out Johnny Franco in close races. Johnny had his best times of the season and still doesn’t have his legs back from all his hard workouts.
“Sophomores, Dustin Elder and Ben Ingle continue to impress in the early season competition,”
On the other half of the meet’s card, the Lady Eagles won six of seven field events and finally got on the winning side of a close meet defeating Bishop Guilfoyle 71-70.
The Lady Eagles were led by Liz Tepsic (100, 300 Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump), Rachel Emigh (100 Dash, Pole Vault, High Jump), and Sarah Cox (Shot Put, Discus) 1st place finishes.
Knowing that the Lady Eagles had no 1600 relay team, Tyrone needed a least a second place in the 3200 run to win the meet. Sarah Halter ran a smart race and secured Tyrone’s first win of the season after two heart breaking losses.
“Our girls are lacking numbers but have a tremendous amount of heart,” Coach Yaniello said. “We very easily could be 3-0 on the season like the boys team.
“Liz Tepsic works so hard and is so dedicated to the sport” Yaniello said. “She is on track to win the conference point championship if she finishes the conference meets undefeated in her events. It’s a phenomenal achievement to be the conference scoring champion.
Next up for the Tyrone thinclads is the Bedford Invitational this Saturday starting at 10:00 am.
