It was Senior Day for the Tyrone Lady Eagle softball team. The only problem was that for their final regular season softball game, the Tyrone seniors, Kimberly Cherry, Amber Davis, Casie Glashauser, Ashley Pennabaker, Shannon Shultz and Megan Turiano, who were honored before the game, had to face always tough Bald Eagle Area at the diamond on the top of the hill at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Park.
BEA (14-1), the 2005 district champ, with their only loss to 2006 district champ Philipsburg-Osceola won an 11-1 five-inning decision. Tyrone (2-15) is certainly not the only team vexed by the Lady Bald Eagles this season. Bald Eagle Area pitchers began the year by recording 66 straight innings of shutout softball, over 11 consecutive wins, in which opponents were able to hit only 18 singles, with no extra-base hits.
Pennabaker, who plays centerfield and leads off, and junior first baseman Lindsay Christine were the only Lady Eagles with base hits off BEA standout Cara Becker, who struck out six and walked one.
Tyrone played Bald Eagle practically even over the first three innings, trailing only 2-0, before BEA scored three times in the fourth and six more in the fifth to invoke the 10-run mercy rule after five innings.
“We played well and were able to stay with them for three innings,” said Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher. “It was Senior Day and we honored our seniors. They have hung tough and provided great leadership. They will be sorely missed next year.”
Lauryn Weaver doubled and drove in three runs for BEA, Whitney Giedroc and Becker each singled and doubled and had one RBI, while Ashley McClain and Brooke Klinefelter each had a pair of RBI.
