While everyone should already be aware of the major changes at St. Matthew School this year with the new building almost ready for students, there will also be another change as Nancy Fransisco is welcomed as the new principal.
Fransisco comes to the school, bringing 35 years of teaching experience along with her principal’s certificate.
Parents and students should also be aware the first day of school has been pushed back.
It was announced yesterday that due to delays in construction, the first day of school for St. Matthew’s students will be moved to Wednesday, September 5, a week later than originally planned.
Parents should be receiving letters regarding this change.
Also, due to the change in the school calendar, an open house originally set for this weekend will be moved to Sunday, September 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The open house will provide parents, church members, community members, and anyone else interested, the opportunity to see the new building and facilities.
Throughout the past year, while construction of the new school was being completed, St. Matthew’s students met at the Tyrone Area Elementary School for class.
The St. Matthew Catholic Church and school family wanted to take the opportunity to thank the Tyrone Area School Board, Dr. William Miller and staff, and everyone else who helped throughout the year, for their generosity in providing the facilities for this past school year.
According to Father Joseph Orr, preschool enrollment for this year is currently at 12 students. There is still room in the preschool program so anyone interested can contact the school for more information.
In kindergarten through sixth grade there are 50 students enrolled for the 2007-08 school year, which Father Orr said is an average number for the school these days.
Although, he did add, “We are looking to improve the enrollment; our target is much higher.”
