With area children heading back to school next week, local Cub Scout Packs are beginning their recruiting efforts encouraging elementary age boys in northern Blair County to join their organizations.
In the Tyrone Area School District, boys have four active Cub Scout Packs, two in Tyrone Borough, one in Warriors Mark, and one in Bald Eagle. In the Bellwood-Antis School District, there is also an active Cub Scout Pack providing Scouting opportunities for elementary age boys in that area.
Cub Scouting is a program through the Boy Scouts of America for boys age six to eleven that has been serving youth for 77 years.
Cub Scouts participate in a variety of different activities, including weekend camping trips, a number of different summer camps, hiking, swimming events, sporting events, tours of various fire halls or police stations depending on the age level, pinewood derby car races, rain gutter regatta boar races, community service events like the annual food drive to benefit the local food banks, trips for special programs various state parks or other outdoor locations, and much more.
Cub Scouts also have weekly meetings. At these events, Scouts often work on a number of different badges along with games and another of other activities that are age-appropriate for the boys participating. All scouts in a Cub Scout Pack are split into ‘Dens’ for most of these weekly meetings. Scouts are split up into ‘Dens’ according to their age level.
Quoting the founder of Boy Scouting, the Cub Scouting program is known to many as “fun with a purpose”.

Information will on various sign-up nights for local Cub Scout Packs will be sent home with boys at local elementary schools and will be released to local newspapers. Sign-up nights will be held during the second week of September.
