The Tyrone Area junior high football team won for the second time in three games on Wednesday evening by taming Lewistown 24-6.
The Little Eagles built up an 18-0 advantage before Lewistown was able to score, then used a ball-control offense to run huge chunks of time off the second half clock in a 24-6 Tyrone triumph.
The defense showed the way for Tyrone, coming up with three interceptions, three sacks and a fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown to get the ball rolling.
Korry Cowher picked up a Lewistown fumble and raced 34 yards for the first score of the game. Cowher also had an individual sack and shared one with down-lineman Kirby Lawrence. Walter Russell, Charles Stringer and Kyle Ripka also shared a sack. Ripka had one interception and James Dorminy had two picks for the Eagle defense.
Kyler Johnson, who led the Tyrone junior high in rushing with nine carries for 89 yards plunged one yard for the Eagles’ second tally of the first quarter. Jeremy Miller, who added 35 yards on seven carries, set up the Johnson touchdown by dashing 22 yards.
In the second quarter, Johnson raced 55 yards for his second TD, before Lewistown scored their lone TD just before halftime.
Although there was no score in the third quarter by either team, the Tyrone offense was the Eagles’ best defense, holding on to the ball for over five and a half minutes of the eight-minute quarter.
In the fourth stanza, the Little Eagles continued their ball control, with Tyrone’s Caleb Snyder running 20 yards for the only score of the second half.
“Overall we played very well. Finally, we are playing all four quarters,” said Tyrone coach Dan Plummer. “We finally had a game that on both offense and defense, we were operating on all cylinders and playing the entire game.”
Stevie Franco made the most of his only carry, scooting for 22 yards, and completed two of seven passes, both to Cowher for 32 yards. Caleb Snyder completed one pass to Kyler Johnson for 27 yards. Snyder ran three times for 28 yards and Zach Burke carried eight times for 38 yards
After three straight loses to open the season, the Tyrone junior high (2-4) defeated Penns Valley 20-8, and knocked off Lewistown in a rare Wednesday game, with only an 18-6 loss to Bald Eagle Area last week in between.
Tyrone will travel next Thursday to play the Philipsburg-Osceola junior high at Philipsburg. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
